TPA 3116 vs the tripaths

I am using a 24v 5a supply for my red board. I think exceeding 5a or 25v for any of these 3116 boards is a no-no.

That's a really nice casing - can you give a parts citation on that? I was wanting to do a blue board build later this summer...

How are you going to control volume? Use a passive pre between source and amp?

The 12v 6a works fine in mine.

You can also buy the 2.1 TPA 3116 completed in case version for around $50. It has a sub connection.

Anyone have any experience with this preassembled model? From what I've briefly read, it seems they may lack a bit of bass. I interested in pairing it with my Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 speakers.

If I would go for ready-made I would probably opt for the SMSL 3118 ("SMSL SA-36A"). The 3118 is a bit lower power than 3116 but from what I read on audiocircles, it should not make much of a difference in practice and may or may not sound eveni slightly better still. The case/build for that one looks much nicer than the 3116 prebuilt one and it has no tone controls to reduce soundquality. I do not like the look and features of that prebuilt 3116, thats mostly why I built my own, which is a breeze if you have even a little DIY experience. Costed less than 40€ total (fancy connectors) and about an hour of drilling and soldering.

I had the 2.1 board without the enclosure,it lacked all the way around on sound the volume did it's job but the treble or whatever it was suposed to be made the sound really colored and not open at all.the last control a gain I think it was awful.do not know how the designed this one but I did not like it,I am going to go with a stock board and add my own preamp every one brags on this on http://www.ebay.com/itm/261009955502 i had some of the same speakers you have and I think it will drive them very nicely.you can get a board with just a volume control those are nice too.

I saw in one of the posts PG mentioned just doing a dedicated volume control one they sold at PE,,just scour these posts you will find the info you need.

does any one use a volume control between the source and their amp ,and does it leave the SQ alone.I am fed up with searching for a PS for the preamp I have,if I could get away with it I would like a 24 step attenuater type.

Thanks for the reply. My original choice was actually the SMSL SA-50 (TDA7492), which I'm assuming is an upgrade from the SMSL SA-36A?

found it,do es anyone think this will effect the SQ of the amp,I would like to find 2 mono and have one for each channel as long as I can keep the input unaffected

Well when I had it here I thought it wasn't as good as the 2 channel red board. My observations were subjective like anything else you read here - but I thought the red 2.0 board was better (seemed like it had higher gain when I swapped back and forth and compared).

If I was buying a preassembled unit I'd try this one out. Let us know how that remote works out for you :)

Seems like a lot of churn on what board is better.... I say buy 'em, try 'em let everyone know what you think of them. Comparisons of course should be done head to head, DIY mods most often don't allow for a head to head comparison because once a board has been modified there is no going back and one's audio memory can be easily skewed.

Still waiting for a head to head comparison of red vs. blue vs. green... 'cause I know some folks have all three on hand and can do it :D

Seems like the blue board prices keep coming down, to stay competitive with red board which is probably just as good ....

Has anyone ever used a volume potentiometer between a 3116 and the source or can it be done and keep the SQ clean and unfiltered.I will do a pre amp later.I just want the B&B board a volume potentiometer and mysource.

It's not really an upgrade I think, but it is a more powerful chip than the TPA3118. I'm not sure how the TDA's sound compares to the TPA's, but I think the TPA chips are newer and considered to maybe sound a little better (purely based on what I've read).

Ok Iknow you dont really need a preamp circuit if the source has a strong enough output,so would a nice ALPS volume pot work as a gain control on the amp board?Surely some one knows Or I will just have to go at it blind.

Guess what: tda7492 with 24V supply @1%THD=2x30w 8 ohm
Now look at 3118 again, surprised?

I have 2 of the 7492 BTL boards going to do them in PBTL,they are are really good board,Currently using the 7498 driving a 3.5 ohm load and it is awesome.I have tried 5 of the d class/chipamp boards so far,I will never buy a high dollar system again.

It will work but the resulting sound will probably not be optimal. The function of a preamplifier is not only to control volume (voltage), but more importantly to regulate impedance between source and amp (providing a high impedance to your source and a low impedance to your amp) and to increase the drive (current). Hooking a source directly to a poweramp with only a passive volume attenuator will in most cases result in a somewhat flat/lifeless sound.

There was a mistake in TI datasheet concerning the connection between the stereo and mono subwoofer amp in 2.1 configuration. YJ red 2.1 copied TI datasheet and result is distorting mono subwoofer output. Did the other 2.1 amps copy TI datasheet as well? Or did they take a look at TI EVM too and discovered the mistake? Did they repair the mistake once discovered??? Next fun bit: Did TI correct datasheet? No, 6 months later they stll working on it :) ! So straight copies from TI datasheet still have a bad subwoofer performance!!!!

YJ 2.0 redboard is a 2.0 board with only a volume pot added, so yes you can do that.

edit: answer above about preamp/volume control is more accurate:) crossed my quick respons

I would say it was not fixed My 2.1 red board was awefulin the sub section.

Wow what a shame it looked promising http://www.ebay.com/itm/400701597526
