Traveling to New England. Looking for advise.

I grew up in Bennington and it's hard to find a bad place to leaf peep around there. 40 years ago there was a lot of cleared land and spectacular vistas from almost any back road. Since then everything has grown up and a lot of those views are gone, but it's still a great place.

My favorite eats would be the West St. Cafe in Bar Harbor. You always want to hit the early bird specials for the discount. Breakfast at Jordans is a required stop. If you drive up the coast, Schoodic Point is a great scenic loop, great photo ops and rocky coast.

If you're into such things, I never miss a chance to go to the Liberty Tool Barn in Liberty Maine, and their other store in Hull's Cove. The Tool Barn in Hull's Cove tends to have better stuff.

There are also some very good used book stores in the area- see the list on my web site under "other stuff".

... or (if you end up on the other side of New England) you might want to stop at Farm-way in Bradford, VT. Right off I-91!

I get all my buffalo plaid wardrobe there! ;-)

My 2 cents for easy access in an RV. Very casual and affordable.

Maine Diner on route 1 in Wells (Guy Fieri was there).
Bob's Clam Hut on route 1 in Kittery. Park at the Kittery Trading Post and check that out too. You'll drop more coin there than at Bob's.

Just to the south in Portsmouth there are numerous restaurants, bars, brewpubs of high quality, plus it's a charming town.

Here's the official Maine foliage guide.

Thanks aopisa for the well wishes and the update on the mountain tops. Can't wait, just hope the colors do.

mhardy6647. Thanks for the color update. 35 degrees eh. Great pic btw. If that's your view you are one lucky guy. Love your wardrobe choice. (I was wonderin' where I could get some cool NE wear. Want to blend in ya know).

Beautiful pics Vg. Thanks for sharing. We will have to keep up with the latest fall color charts. I don't know if we will head up as far as the Whites if the color has already peaked. We are playing this live which is what we want. They look awesome from the pics and lets hope the 13th/14th are the PEAK color time. Nolans pub looks cool.

Thanks Rockyhill for the Maine Diner suggestion as well as Bobs Clam Hut.(Awesome name. Wonder what they serve there???? :scratch2:)
Yum-er-ama.
Thanks for the great foliage guide. That will def. come in handy.:yes:

Thanks EP. Always good to know where some good inns are located.

holyman772. I checked out the Maine Diner link and looked at the menu. The Crab cakes look good as do the Buffalo Shrimp, Mushroom caps and The Jim Nantz. We will be going past Kennybunkport on our way back to Woosta. I think we should stop.

Great suggestions ConradH. Thanks for the West St Cafe and Jordans ideas. Good to know about the early bird discounts too. Schoodic Point sounds like our cup of chowder re. pics of the coast and colors.

Man, this Audiofool is gettin' hungry.

You guys are great to help me and Mrs Bucky out like this.
Please keep those suggestions coming. As the time gets closer I will start to really map out our route to follow the colors and to make sure we don't miss to much. I need to get another battery for my camera that's for sure.

You guys are Wicked Cool. (did I say that right)?:thmbsp:

If you like wildlife refuges, the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge is an interesting place. Off I-95, a few miles north of Maine's southern border.

Lexington and Concord MA has a good history walk trail through the fields. Plus the Concord Colonial Inn, built in 1716, has the best Yankee Pot Roast to be found.

Though not on the coast, the Atlantic Sea Grill, in Acton MA, has good whitefish. Would not be the same as a small town coastal seafood experience.

Have a wonderful trip and bring back pictures!

Wicked pissah!

oh, here's a crash course in not looking like an out-of-towner in MA:

Leominster = Lemminsta
Leicester = Lesta
Revere = Reveah
Medford = Meffa'
Haverhill = Haverill
Woburn = Woob'n
I-95 = Route 128

Left turns from the right lane across traffic are OK in Cambridge. Especially in an RV...

You're all set now.

The White Mntns will be very near at peak on your trip. I will be up there the 7th through the 10th. Also, that area would still look beautiful if it were the target of a nuclear strike... We've been there in Spring and summer too. At least the Jackson to Lincoln area should not be missed.

If not, make CERTAIN to visit the lakes area, perhaps an hour to the South!

BB- If you are coming through the Milford, NH area (west of Nashua) let me know. There's a great town center with a bunch of good restaurants and a gazebo in the middle of the rotary. I'll take you out to lunch. The drive along Rt. 101 and 9 into Vermont is really pretty during peeping season.

It's not seafood, but while you're in the White Mountains a stop at Polly's Pancake Parlor in Sugar Hill, NH is well worth it: "Famous pancakes & other daytime eats in a rustic, circa 1830 setting with mountain views...."

so if you are starting in Worcester, you are only half an hour away from Julio's in Westboro. You have an RV and a week to tool around so you will need beer. This is a beer mecca of sorts, and worth the trip if you enjoy a good craft beer selection. The White Mountains are fabulous. Franconia Notch (The Flume, The Basin, The former Old Man in the Mountain views, and then a little time in Lincoln, NH. Across the Kancamagus Highway for the best views in the state into North Conway where there are a plethora of excellent restaurants/pubs/saloons etc... and if you are a real beer person, one of the best Belgian beer bars is right across the Maine border in Lovell known as Ebenezer's. Nice menu there as well. By the way, at this point you are a short drive to The Mount Washington Auto Road which would be a hoot in an RV, but I would suggest the guided tour or the cog, views can be spectacular.
In all cases, have a camera and a good time.

Thanks jhtstone for those links. I love a good pot roast and thanks for the well wishes. I will be posting my pics on Photobucket for all to see when I get back.

Thanks for teachin' me the finer points of 'How to Speak New English' and how to drive in Ma. That will come in handy mhardy6647. Do I need to use turn signals???

Hope you have an awesome time in the Whites Vg. Let me know how they look when you get back. The lakes area looks really nice as well and we will put that on our list of places to drive through and check out.:yes: I love those pics you posted. The 2nd one is awesome. Where is that exactly? (if you can remember)

Thanks for the awesome invite bobsvinyl. Very cool of you to do. Good to know about RT 101 and 9 also.

Thanks for the heads up on the pancakes Andover23. Who doesn't like some really good flapjacks.

Thanks for letting me know about where to get good beer stupidhead. Julio's will be on my list FOR SURE.:beer: It's good to know about the North Conway area as well as Ebenezers. :thmbsp: I will for sure have my camera by my side at all times.

A little late, but Cape Cod is one of my favorite destination spots in the fall and have made it a habit to go at least once every other year.

Of all the towns in the Cape, my favorite is actually at the very end, Provincetown. There's tons of places to stay, but Benchmark Inn is my favorite, which is a fantastically operated B&B with service equal to that of any 5-star hotel.

Lots of great restaurants, bars, shopping, galleries and activities in the area as well as being surrounded by the waterfront.

The second photo you mention is near the former old man (notch area) as mentioned above. These spots should really not be missed. North Conway is nice, but this time of year as I have previously mentioned the traffic will scare you. You said you wanted to avoid crowds, correct? Here are more from the immediate area, again, 2 generation old cell phone pics:

You like flapjacks eh? Here are my banana pecan cakes and what message I left the waitress upon my departure!:

Remember the all you can eat ribs special at the Christmas Farm Inn in Jackson? My wife & I have dinner reservations there on the 7th, 8th, & 9th. Different special every night!

Awesome pics. Those 'cakes look mouth watering and from the looks of things you obviously liked them. Now I am hungry again....
Yes we would like to stay far away from the crowds if possible so thanks for the heads up on N. Conway. I am realistic though and know that there will be times we will be in traffic. With all the really great suggestions you and everyone have given me I think we will be in good shape. I will try to always have a backup plan in my hip pocket incase we find ourselves in and amongst hordes of peepers.
You bet I remember the All you can eat ribs special on Thurs night. Looks like you will be having an awesome turkey dinner, steaks and ribs. Not to mention some good vino.

I like that waterfall.
Kancamangus Highway, Hwy 302 and Hwy 2 all look like good roads to be on.
