Troubleshooting CD Players

I would only buy from Liberty. I have used theirs and they work. I've had a couple duds and they immediately send a replacement when you contact them. No adjustment should be necessary but if there is a playability issue, then yes. 3 adjustments; Focus Bias, Laser Power and Tracking Balance and I don't remember which pot does what.
All those 3 listed above are KSS-240A listed on the Liberty eBay storefront. I was wondering if there is a difference between them.

They just change the description to help the search engine. As long as it says KSS-240A, it's the same part.

Dear dr*Audio,

My Sansui CD-X 301i started to stop reading the CD after about 1 hour of play.

After checking the laser and lubricating the transport mechanism, it started working again and stopped after about 1 hour, it always shows the TOC then shows track 01 and stops, not playing.

I later noticed that if I remove the laser head from the mechanical transport and put it back in place, it starts reading again for about 1 hour and then we go back to the previous situation of reading the TOC and stopping at track 01.
I removed and put the laser head back in place a lot of times and it always starts playing again for about an hour and then again stops.

Any ideas on what the problem is?

Thank you very much

Ps.: Also replaced the laser for a KSS-210A , tried original CD's or CD R' s but it did not change it' s behaviour!

There are a few possibilities:
1. The sled is hanging up near the outer edge of the CD. Remove the gear that drives the laser and move the laser back and forth, checking for smooth travel. Clean and lubricate as necessary.
2. Sled motor has a bad spot.
3. Sled motor drive IC heats up and stops working.
4. Cable to the laser is intermittant.
5. Try this first; put a couple drops of light machine oil on the top bearing of the disc motor. Dry bearings cause bit errors.

Many tks. for your reply and:
1) Already done
2) + 3) How can I check it?
4) I think it is strange because of the repeated pattern but...
5) Also already done.

I bought and will get this week a non working equal cd player and will change the sled and will come back with the result.

Connect a meter set to volts across the sled motor wires. Monitor the voltage as you play the CD. Should rise to around 1V at most, then the sled moves and the voltage will drop down to 0V. If it rises to 1V or above then the voltage drops negative that means either the motor is bad and is requiring more voltage to get it to move, or the sled is binding. When the voltage goes negative that means it took too much voltage to move the sled and it overshot when it finally moved.

Ok, I will try that and will come back asap with the result, thank you!

The first Sansui CD X301 and the second one that I ordered for parts are both working now!
Again thank you very much for your help.

The firts one had this part out of place and extra greased...
The parts one had 2 sled legs broken and one belt missing, someone tried to fix the belt with a translucent brown one, the broken plastic legs and bits of belt were free inside ...

Hi Warren.

My NAD 5300 has stopped spinning the disc it seems. I had it open when I first got it (not long ago) cleaned and lubed the usual places and also re-seated the front face board that was never seated fully (so I guess it's just "seated" and not "re-seated"?) so the eject button was intermittent. That works 100% now. Unit played test discs and even made a cassette for my son- played the full "best of Kansas" CD for that tape. Now, not so good.

Put disc in, close drawer, press play, display comes up for track 1 sub track 00 and then nothing more happens.
Put disc in, press play, drawer closes, display comes up, nothing more.

So that basic (second) test confirms the "play" button is sending the signal to play, since it closes the drawer. I initially thought maybe the board had twisted or the play switch just failed, but I think it's fine.

When disc is retrieved after testing, it is clear it has not rotated- it is the same "clock position" as when I inserted it.

I have not popped the hood as I was fixing a portable (which is not going well) but coming back to this before said portable is lodged in the sheetrock...

Since it was working and then went on strike, I thought I'd ask here before shotgunning the thing (literally and figuratively).

Thank you, sir!

Well, you need to go to my first post and review the troubleshooting instructions, but the first thing to determine is if the disc motor is moving at all. If not and you don't hear a sizzling sound, the unit has not completed focus lock. Remove the CD and load the drawer and confirm that the lens is going up and down in focus search. If not, the sled is not in the home position or the home switch is dirty. If it is going into focus search and doesn't spin and you hear no sizzling, the laser is bad.

Okay, so, I went inside and manually moved the (large) gear that drives the sled, so the sled was then off the end/center (of disc) stop position. The drawer didn't want to close, but I pushed it in manually and it took it the rest of the way in, and the disc was spinning.

Opened the drawer, closed the drawer (both with the button) and pressed play- now it's playing.

I can skip to the next song- all the way to the last one (and scan within a song) so the sled is presumably moving properly... obviously focusing well enough as it's playing (and sounding quite nice)... DID I MENTION I LOVE INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS?

Is the home switch at the center of disc position of the sled? Maybe this is the issue... dirty contacts within perhaps... taking the transport out of the case is rather... unpleasant, but I've done it already.

I have it playing the last song out to the end of the disc. I'll then eject and re-play.

Sounds like the home switch needs to be cleaned. It's near the disc motor (center). If it has a plastic cover over the leaf switch end you have to CAREFULLY pull it straight out to remove it, clean the switch with a piece of paper soaked in Deoxit, and carefully slide the cover back on the switch till it clicks into place. Note which way the cover faces before you remove it!

I’m with you. I’ll see if I can get to it today.

This is a great player. No idea who made it but it sounds great (other than the headphone amp). Drawer has a positive and solid motion. Entire drive is shock mounted.

I’d like to figure out why the remote motor drive for variable output doesn’t run but I doubt the juice is worth the squeeze. Other remote functions are fine so probably the motor, connection or support circuits. Sensor obviously works so at least it’s narrowed down.

Probably the motor drive IC.

I powered it up to remove the disc from last night's testing and it wouldn;t spit it out. Forced the drawer out, and it basically went "limp" like the drawer motor was disconnected (nothing broke).

Then wouldn't go back in, so I pushed it halfway, tried the door switch which brought it out... then pressed again to go back in.

Put the disc in to see what would happen and it closed and played first try. (brute force always prevails)

Tearing the drive out (again) to check and clean stuff. I may have to pull a board off the bottom of the transport... I do know I have to remove a lot to get the transport into a "serviceable" condition. (not looking forward to it honestly) This thing is pretty packed with boards and quite heavy for a CD player. I see a couple Yamaha and one Sanyo chip on the main board; plenty of Toshiba but I don't count them...

Poking around I see this runs dual-mono DACs. BB PCM56 ("K" spec, which is highest grade as graded by Ti).

It continues to work, so I haven't touched it yet... (It won't act up again until I close the top of course)

And that variable output pot is not tracking either. Left channel fell way low on me (so no point investing time on that for the moment). "fixed" output sounds great, even passing through the tape deck before the headphone amp.
