Tuners?

Why do radio tuners have to be so big? The is not much in them that takes that much space
I'm looking for good tuner that is no wider than about 15" but they are no where to be found.

Standard always has been around 17". Worldwide. You will find some smaller ones. Mid size. But no outstanding tuners. Midclass I would say.

If it should be vintage, look for Kenwood. KT-2001, Monacor St-50X, Naim T14, Kenwood KT-3500, Onkyo 433, Kenwood KT-2001A, Aiwa R22, National Panasonic ST-3400, Realistic TM-800. Just to point out a few.

Yeah I would consider a vintage unit.

BTW, with the newer units they are all electronic and there is nothing mechanical inside The biggest thing would be the input transformer .
IMO there is no reason to be that big other than being able to charge more money for one.
I am always amazed how some buy audio hardware with their eyes and not with their ears.:)

I can get a Kenwood. KT-2001, for $35 with about $50 shipping on e-bay from a seller with 100% favorable rating
Is that a good deal?
Seller says everything works fine The only issue is a dial bulb needs to be replaced
It looks nice with just a little normal wear and tear that is normal for for a vintage unit but nothing is broken or missing.

I seems just about what I'm looking for.:)

i read the review of the Kenwood. KT-2001 and it seems pretty good.

I also messaged the seller to verify that everything functions properly other than the two burnt out dial bulbs and he answered quickly and said it did. .
So I will order it

Thanks for the recommendations.:)

in a word - no. from the tunerinfo site:
"Kenwood KT-2001 (1971, $120/orig $100) and KT-2001A (1974, $120) search eBay
The KT-1300B, KT-1300G, KT-2001 and KT-2001A are crummy old budget tuners that are probably not even worth what you'd pay to have someone ship them. With so many decent Kenwoods available dirt cheap, why bother with these? The only reason we're even listing them is that we're tired of seeing eBay sellers call them "rare" just because they weren't listed on this site. "Rare" does not mean "good." The KT-2001 and KT-2001A had an astoundingly poor capture ratio of 4 dB, but what do you expect for tuners that sold for $120 when new?"

there's a plethora of outstanding tuna for <$100, if you're patient, that come exceedingly close to "the best". and, while standard width (for most), they are not as tall as that kenwood, or as tall, at most. look for nikko gamma 1, hitachi ft8000, jvc fx1100bk, sanyo plus series t35 & t5, creek cas3140 to name a few, off the top of my head. the only caveat w/the creek is you want to use its din out instead of the rca's, unless your preamp and/or system has really high gain.

to be honest, that contradicts the user reviews I have read about it.... and it's just one opinion.

BTW $120 30-40 years ago was a lot more money then

It just shows that you can never please everyone with anything .. :)

yes - $120 was worth more then than it is today. but the tuners i mentioned are so much better sounding, and have better reception. and, re: pricing, the nikko gamma 1, for example, is 44 years old, and it sold for $400. the sanyos, >40 years old, were $300-$350. the hitachi, also >40 years old, was $460. the jvc, only 35 years old, was $470. the creek, also only ~35 years old, was a mere $375...

i think whatever reviews you read about that kenwood are highly suspect, and/or written by folks who've never actually listened to decent tuna. but if you want something for background and not serious listening, have at it!

To be fair - its a nice, small tuner. Good reception, good sound. Nothing oustanding. I have had a lot of tuners of that era. So I trust my ears.
:D
I wouldn't agree with the recension of tuner info. But surely there are much better tuners. You have to look for a while in finding some for reasonable prices. The price of $35 is fine - but regarding shipping costs on top...

my sony st-80f is also a nice small tuner. and, while never having heard the kt2001, i suspect they're quite comparable. (and my st-80f sounds at least as good as the mint mcintosh mr74 and refurb'd mr77 i owned, which just goes to show high price doesn't necessarily mean good sound. ;))

and, re: kenwoods, i also owned, among others, a kt5500, which was also mediocre at best. and likely better than the kt2001 - at least as far as reception goes; if the kt2001 sounds as good, it's still not up to snuff, imo. you say you wouldn't agree w/what fmtunerinfo says about it, but it seems you come to a similar conclusion - add shipping costs to the $35, and is it worth it?

i picked up my nikko gamma 1 for <$50, shipping included. it has scratches on the top cover, but is otherwise decent. i picked up a mint refurb'd slightly modded sherwood s3300 for $30 off ebay; no shipping cuz the seller was local. (and he showed me the work he did inside, when i picked it up.) and i got a really nice jvx fx1100bk for $20 off craigslist locally. these offer outstanding sonics and excellent reception. so, i'd have to pass on a low end tuna, when patience will reward you with something that won't be embarrassed by one of the best at any price. like you said - "You have to look for a while in finding some for reasonable prices." :) i agree w/fmtunerinfo's take - sometimes things are rare and it makes them valuable; other times because they're not of value, and no one cares. ford pintos, chevy vegas and amc pacers are also rare... maybe 100 years from now, they might be valuable, but today? not so much.

i also trust my ears - i've owned >100 tuna over the past 35 years. :beatnik:

It seems, you have much more offers about tuners than we have in Germany/Europe. Nikko is very seldomly to find, as Sherwood is. There a many fine german tuners for less money - but that doesn't help, living in the States:bigok:

yes, there are really nice tuners in europe. one inexpensive model i mentioned is of european origin - the creek cas3140. i have a uher eg751 that i bought when in latvia, and a saba ts2000 i had shipped to the usa. both are very good; i think the uher is better. while not bargains, they shouldn't be too expensive in europe - ~$150usd shipped? same for the revox a76 i have - it cost me <$150, shipped from europe to the usa. my revox b261 and b260s were a bit more... ;)

other excellent tuna, more common in europe than the usa, are the aiwa at9700u, and the sony st-a6b. not $50, but still quite reasonable for the performance offered. i'm sure you know a bit more about the excellent <$100 shipped tuna in europe than i do!

happy listening,
