Vintage Entry Level Options

Thickness of belt makes a big difference in speed control. I acquired a collection of new belts for my Yamaha from different sources until I found the proper thickness.

But..

Let's try something first.

The platter is off, right?

Get a paper towel and just a light squirt on the towel (not on the turntable) of windex glass cleaner.

Wipe the inner platter pulley and the motor pulley just to make sure they're clean.
 
I'd also go ahead and wash the belt with a little dish soap and water to make sure it's not oily either.

Dry it off with a towel, but don't stretch it much when you do.
 
When everything is clean, reassemble and but don't put on platter mat just yet.

Through the hole in the platter where you wrap the belt around the motor pulley, take a pic and attach it here so I can see something.

We want to see the belt on the motor pulley.
 
Used TT, that works perfect... Technics or Sony with a new $125 AT cart on sale on eBay for $75.

Also always get new headshell leads.

Did you take a pic of the belt around the motor pulley? Let me see if I can tell if the belt is rubbing.

Take the pic through the hole in the platter.

Now, run the table without the mat and see if the belt is rubbing on that speed selection fork. It looks good from the pic, but in motion may be different.

Also switch the speed selector to 45 (while it's running, never change speeds while it's not turning), then switch the speed back to 33. Listen and look for any signs of rubbing.
 
Ok, another thing to check is that the pulley itself is securely on the motor shaft. It could be that years of use/disuse has it loose so that the motor shaft is spinning inside it, but not it.

Do you have a small screwdriver? The one that you used for the headshell screws should be fine.

Pull the platter off, and tighten the screw that holds the pulley to the motor shaft - it goes in sideways. In your pic, it look to be at the 6-o'clock position.

Just tighten it a little. Don't loosen.
 
If there isn't a screw in there, we've found your problem.
