Vintage Marantz 2270 vs a New harman Kardon HK 235

Do you want to listen to 2 channel music or do surround sound/movies?
Do you want to deal with sometimes fiddley vintage gear or have plug and play with a 2 year warranty ?
Some people dont regard the 2270 as that great of a unit (as far as vintage Marantz's go), but I'd bet a good one could edge out any new H/K up to the 635 (maybe even higher) in 2 channel music, but the Marantz will never give you 5.1/6.1/7.1 surround sound with video switching, Dolby, etc.

thanks for the inputs, I asked the question since I was thinking of getting rid of my marantz integrated in favor of 6.1 AVR from HK, that is if the audio quality was in the same league. now that you guys have confirmed that HK AVR are not as good in audio compared to a vintage Marantz unit, then I need to get more 2 more vintage marantz to complete a 6.1 HT setup

That can work easily enough with an pre/pro but might require a bit of work each time you want to use it. I have considered it myself prior to this recent boom in the vintage receiver prices.
Regarding your original question, I have an H/K AVR80 MkII (going on 8 years old, i believe) and my parents have an H/K 130 receiver that replaced their Marantz SR2100 (I think that was the model). Granted, the SR was just past the peak of the marantz era, but there was no drop in SQ switching from the SR to the H/K. The SR was simpler to use and looks are subjective, i could see how one could prefer either of the two. I am just unsure of the longevity of the HK in light of most of the recent electronics being fairly disposable. I guess what it comes down to is this: Pay a good chunk of change to bring the Marantz back to as new condition and now worry about it for 15-20 more years, or sink the same money into the receiver, give you as good of sound and more features with the risk or having to replace in 5-10? I've had great luck with my AVR80 and don't foresee any problems in the near future.
