For my money Ketel One is the best tasting vodka on the market...the wholesaler I worked for traded Bombay Gin and Dewars Scotch for Ketel One and Beefeater Gin to better align ourselves with a key supplier...we came out far ahead on the trade because of Ketel One...we also blind tasted Ketel against Absolut, Grey Goose, Belvedere, and Chopin and Ketel won easily...then along came Titos...Ketel also has a sister gin called Nolet, named after the founding family...very expensive though.
It's pretty amazing what Tito's has built using reprocessed MGP or ADM rectified spirit.
All I know is that is disappears nicely in Bloody Mary’s.It's pretty amazing what Tito's has built using reprocessed MGP or ADM rectified spirit.
Yep, Tito's is a prime example of right place, right time, right marketing...typically vodka represents about 3 out of every ten bottles sold or about 33% of the overall spirits sales...thus there are a jillion different vodka brands and flavors lurking in the largest spirits category looking for any business they can get...and Smirnoff was firmly entrenched as the category leader for years so for an unknown brand to come out of nowhere and in a few short years become a global brand that outsells all others by far and is still growing is pretty remarkable...and Titos has been sued several times by people who sue for a living claiming false advertising, and guess what, the more they got sued, the faster the brand grew....and most all vodka comes from a rectifier somewhere, in many cases from Plant City , Fla.It's pretty amazing what Tito's has built using reprocessed MGP or ADM rectified spirit.
Although High West does have a 250 gallon copper still, they source a significant amount of distillate from MGP Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Ind...they take the distillate and apply their "special techniques" to the finishing process and have had award winning results using this method...many big name distilleries purchase distillate and even finished goods from MGP...absolutely nothing wrong in using this method and the results are generally excellent, although a bit less glamorous than making your own...old brands like Ezra Brooks, Yellowstone, and Rebel Yell, now simply Rebel because, well you know, are house brands for MGP.High West Rye
If my memory serves me correctly, Penelope is one of MGP's actual brands. Sometimes whiskey snobs poo poo on MGP, but it is a very competent distillery. That said, I'm a big fan of disclosure and truth in labeling.Although High West does have a 250 gallon copper still, they source a significant amount of distillate from MGP Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Ind...they take the distillate and apply their "special techniques" to the finishing process and have had award winning results using this method...many big name distilleries purchase distillate and even finished goods from MGP...absolutely nothing wrong in using this method and the results are generally excellent, although a bit less glamorous than making your own...old brands like Ezra Brooks, Yellowstone, and Rebel Yell, now simply Rebel because, well you know, are house brands for MGP.

Vortex Alley, out of Ponca City, OK. Closest brewery to my AO. Decent enough.

I agree, but the fact is a great deal of marketing is perception or what you can make someone believe enough to make a purchase...Titos produces millions of cases of vodka, no way it could be "handmade", yet the BATF has ruled they can say it is "handmade" on the label... go figure....many distillers put "sour mash" on their label in an attempt to differentiate their bourbon from others...fact is most all bourbons are sour mash. which only means the next run was started from a bit of distillate left over from the previous run...the yeast in the leftover distillate acts to activate the fermentation process in the new run...and yes MGP makes some fine bourbon for many clients who don't wish to make that fact known.
