Gin and Tonic anyone?

The first time I ever drank gin I got sick. I was in the 11th grade and a buddy stole a nearly empty bottle from his dad. A couple warm swigs was not worth it, and the four of us weren't going to catch a buzz splitting 4 ounces anyway.
Fast forward to the present.. another buddy made me a gin and tonic with Gilbeys Gin and a splash of lime. Wow, it is now my go to drink especially on hotter days. I make a lot of vodka tonics using the same simple recipe. I find that using mid shelf gin/vodka is adequate for drinks that are going to be mixed. Definately stay away from the bottom shelf stuff. Recently a friend gave me a 1.75 liter bottle of Ketel One vodka for my birthday. Yes, the taste is a tad smoother than my normal brand, but not so much so that I will pay 2 1/2 times that of my normal "whatever is on sale around $20" brand.

Botanist gin...none better.
i like tanqueray for G&Ts. its more assertive than i like for martinis, but works well against tonic. hedricks would probably work well too.

When I drank Gin (back when I drank any Alcohol - Gave it up just because I wanted to be healthier), I drank Tanqueray. But a lot of my friends at the time went Bombay or Beefeaters. We all mixed it with Tonic water.
Odd story regarding Gin. I had a doctor back then tell me that I needed to stop Gin drinking immediately, as it was among the worst of the alcohols you could put in your body. He told me that since it was made from Juniper Berries, the ingestion of them, because of and as part of the distilling process, made Gin mildly toxic. He recommended if I absolutely was going to drink, drink Vodka.
Back then, we did not have the Internet nor Google, so I could not be an "Instant Expert" and look this fact up to confirm it or call it bunk, so I just gave up Gin based on his statements and switched to Vodka and Tonic.
Regardless, the bright side of G&T, with all the Quinine in that Tonic Water, you'd never get Malaria!

You should read the social commentary during the the 19th century about "Gin" mills. Back then it could be some really evil rotgut. Of course with the discovery of quinine an anti-malarial treatment which was then added, along with sugar and lemon juice, to the gin ration given to solders of the British East India Company Gin and tonic was born. When I drank G&T I liked my Gin and Tonic to be made with either Schweppes Bitter Orange, or Bitter Lemon tonic water. I don't mix the tonic water anymore I just use it over ice minus the gin.

I'm not much on G&T - vodka's more my thing - but my wife likes them and we found an inexpensive gin that she likes a lot. The brand is Pearl, made in Canada, don't know a thing about it other than that.

Have to agree. There is a gin that I have been drinking from Montana that is pretty good though. I can't remember the name at the moment, guess I had to much . . .
No gin and tonics before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. It just ain't cricket.
Do you also adhere to the "no white clothing" rule? ;-)

They make Healy’s Gin
I have seen this Gin at the local booze emporiums but have never tried it. Just on their site they have a interesting Juniper Juice that is aged in Oak barrels :scratch2:
