The 8 is a 20 bit filter and DAC, the 9 is 24 bit. The 8 was upgradable to a 9, for around $800, but I could probably get a modern and better player for half the cost, like that Emotiva everyone is talking about.

The dCS Ring DAC is said to be based on a high speed autocorrelation DAC architecture originally developed in the UK in the 1980s for military aircraft radar. The device is said to be capable of handling 24-bit digital words at up to 192 kHz sampling frequencies. In addition to this new DAC, the Alpha 9 also features the Pacific Microsonics chip set for HDCD capability.

I wish, that's the Model 9 you're thinking of, 2 models above this one, 8, 8se, then 9. They all use the same Sony transport and aluminum chassis.
