I've gone through five preamps this year already, but now completely settled on my ARC SP-14. I now see why so many here swear by ARC gear. I've never heard a better sounding unit.

My current preamp is a PassLabs XP20...very detailed and theater pass thru to boot. An audio step up from the Mark Levinson 380S and the Passlabs X-1. User interface on the 380S is still the best of any preamp I have used.

Please, it's ARC not AR! We wouldn't want Audio Research Corporation confused with Audio Research of AR speaker fame. AR did make a preamp at one time.

Edits made, my apologies. Didn't realize there would be ANY confusion. Though it is only Audioresearch.com :thmbsp:

Or Acoustic Research, either! ;) Pretty sure Vilchur, one of audio's greats, wouldn't be too pleased being associated with ARC, either.

My first "high end" audio eq purchase was a preamp. I had just graduated Naval Nuclear Power School in the summer of '79 and I treated myself to an Audionics BT-2 while I was home on leave for $750. A tidy sum for a young sailor in those days. I still have it and it remained the centerpiece of my system(s) until very recently when I bought a Forte' Audio Model 2 preamp.

The Forte' maintained the clear soundstage and imaging I'd be come accustomed to with the BT-2 and the Nelson Pass phono stage sounds amazing. A true class a preamp. I kinda miss my BT-2 though :sigh:
