JBLNUT I'm looking forward to your update when you get the GT-2000 unpacked and up and running. My expectations are quite high that you will be thrilled with the table.

Let's just say there's a reason there aren't many GT2K's in the USA and leave it at that. You need the patience of a saint as well as a pretty good sense of humor to get through the process that is making an international purchase. That said, Fed-X tells me I'm getting a large box from Japan next week - which is of course the week I'm away on business.

Oh well, pics will follow soon enough as the shoot out begins....

Wonderful.

If you could please document the unpacking. Especially show the AKers the platter top and underside. It is a beautiful thing in and of itself.

I can't wait for your listening appraisal. :thmbsp:

Edit: Too late. Don't do it for me please.

Craig I'm sure you'v been excited waiting for this day to arrive. From the photos of the boxes/packaging it's all first class and HiFiDo didn't cut any corners. Theo beat me to it, how much does the Yamaha weigh? I can well understand why you decided on the 2000L, the finish looks beautiful. Did HiFiDo include a step down transformer? I'm sure you'll be up late tonight, ENJOY!

The GT 2000L basically weighs the same as the 2000; 29Kg.

I don't know why, but it is the heaviest 29Kg I've ever lifted in my life. I know that sounds silly, but it feels like it is solid lead. I hate lifting mine. Arkay carried his home and it nearly killed him.

I'm sure that it has an atom of black hole substance in it. :D

Congrats! Awesome table! I'm interested to hear what exactly is involved in getting one of these from hifido. Jblnut, you mention patience and a sense of humor.... What all hoops must be jumped through to get one of these?

Also, could one of you guys that got one give me a rough estimate what shipping one runs. Was insurance included? PM is fine if you don't want it public.

Well that would depend upon where you are. There are English speaking AKers with GT 2000 turntables who live in Japan. The shipping to them was minimal.

The shipping to me in Queensland Australia was about $400US. Not cheap. I'll tell you that if my GT 2000 died I'd buy another one. It is the foundation of my system and an amazing turntable simply as the stock unit. It zooms ahead in performance when carefully isolated to become something that needs to be heard to be believed. Just placing it upon a heavy stand is nothing approaching isolating it.

When the GT came out in '82. The West was in the thrall of the Linn Sondek. According to the accepted 'wisdom' no other turntable even approached the Linn on the grounds of performance. The Linn was available in Japan in '82 for half the price of the GT 2000. Despite that, the GT 2000 was a huge sales success for Yamaha. Many thousands of the GT 2000 types(GT 2000/GT 2000L) were sold. What does that tell you about the GT 2000 vs "The World's Best Turntable" in 1982?

Thanks theophile for your post. I'm in the USA. Would love to come across one of these in person.

How was dealing with hifido? Is there someone that speaks English?

They speak English. Apparently they are shy of people with email addresses from free e-mail servers like hotmail, gmail etc. If you have an email account linked to your ISP they prefer to respond to them since they are proof of an ongoing financial commitment(ie you have to pay for your ISP account). That is what I have been told any years ago and I couldn't get any reply from them until I corresponded via my ISP email account.

They are very honest and their packing is second to none. Your turntable will survive a thermonuclear event if packed by HiFiDo.
