What is this part found rattling around inside an LP12?

What is this thing? Found it rattling around inside a Linn Sondek LP12.
It's a plastic cylinder with a metal ball on a spring mounted inside. It has some red paint on it as well.

I'd guess it's some kind of "upgrade". It will have a name spelled with a K where you'd expect a c. Maybe something like Defunkt. It would have cost about £700. Six months later there would have been an upgrade for that upgrade which would cost you another £700. Of course, each upgrade would take the performance to the next level.

Does that cylinder by chance fit over the platter bearing?

My Heybrook has a similar appendage attached to the bottom of the motor; I think it's to absorb vibration.

As a Linn owner. Thier upgrades are too pricey. But, as opposed to my Pioneer PL570. After 50 years, I can still get parts. And do my own work on it. It won't end up a door stop. And it sounds pretty good.
