What is YOUR pet peeve? Let's have a laugh.

The next weird thing is all the "advice and warnings" that the weather people offer.
"Stay hydrated"
"You might want to bring a sweater"
"Keep your umbrella handy"
"Don't drive through standing water"
"Lots of traffic delays - allow plenty of time to get where you are going."
"If you are going hiking (a constant fascination with weather people here), BE SURE TO TAKE WATER!" Uh, ok.
Great list! Also...
"High profile vehicles are more susceptible to wind. Keep both hands on the wheel."

...and a new favorite of mine from our "esteemed" governor (who shall remain nameless)...

From his/her office.. "Governor BlahBlah says that dangers from high heat are cumulative; the longer you're out in severe heat, the more dangerous it is."

Man, if she/he had only given that pearl of wisdom to that frog (referencing frogs not noticing the water in which they're sitting getting hotter and hotter until they die).

A perfect, prime example of just how stupid many of our elected "representatives" think we are.

The weather report on local news. First, it takes up 90% of the time slot allotted for the local news. But worse yet, it features the ludicrous art of reading temperature, humidity, and wind numbers from about 20 locations on a visible MAP with all the temps displayed! Do they think we can't read? Is there an audience who is dying to know the exact temperature in 20 locations around their home?

Where I live - roughly Phoenix - Within a 50 mile radius of downtown, the temps will be within 3 degrees. So, if it is 112F downtown, do you really need to know it is only 111F in one of the burbs, and 113 in another burb? Like, someone is home saying, "Damn! I'm not going to Scottsdale tomorrow, it's going to be 114F!" It's frickin' hot everywhere in southern AZ until you climb into the mountains!

Most of that information is not meant for people with common sense.
It's mainly for the people that need to know
stuff like this...

By the same token, I am amazed at the host of vague descriptors used by these "meteorologists" such as:

a possibility
a strong possibility
might be
could happen
might develop
a suggestion of
a chance of
in the cards
up in the air
looks like
don't hold your breath
more than likely
my bet is
on the safe side
my best guess is
there's a trend
a dice throw
my money's on
looks like
a guess at this point...

and the list goes on,
with "pin point" accuracy.

Q

People who say "have a great rest of your day"...

Like WTF...

Whatever happened to just saying "have a great day"? Do you think I am going to go back and relive the part of the day that has already passed by? What comes next? "Have a great next fifteen minutes of your life"... Also at what point does my "rest of the day" end? Does it end when the sun goes down or when the clock strikes midnight?

Have a great day people and avoid the stupidity that is all around us. We are living in Idiocracy right now. Brawndo, it's what plants crave...

Got a peeve.
A pretty serious one.
Modern vehicle related.
One I think is of import...least to me it is.
I dont' think I'm alone on this "thought train"; although it might be... off the track?

It's having a screen on board, in order to operate the basics while trying to keep the car/truck on the road.

It seems that "distracted driving habits" have been increasing, being one of the major causes of accidents. And as a result of this, a more stringent approach from enforcement has taken place in order to cope with this drastic situation of crashes on the highways and roads.

However, with the manufacturers have gone the route of use of screens, and they seem to becoming larger all the time!

I wonder if this mode of "communication with the car and the operation of screens" is in fact contributing to the carnage that is happening on the roads today...making things worse!?

:dunno:

Q
A:
  • NHTSA Data: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified that interacting with vehicle screens is a leading cause of distraction-related crashes, often more so than mobile phone use in some contexts because the interface is integrated into the vehicle's primary control system.

I'm a bit shocked that this one hasn't surfaced already.

Today's Pet Peeve: 125,000 FLOCK cameras magically appearing across the country.

I'm not aware of any Bill passed in Congress. I'm not aware of any ballot measured the public would have voted on.
I'm not aware of any legislation that defines, or restricts, what can be collected and what can be done with that collection.

This is purely a creation of the TechBros Mafia who found a new way to milk already strained city budgets with a $3500/year/camera collection fee for the next Trillionaire. The heck with pensions, police budgets, property taxes and all the rest - let's put up 120,000 civic toll booths!

Amazingly, at least to me, one would think that the vehicle insurers would greatly pressure the governing aspects to curtail this ever increasing trend, since their payouts would be increasing, and we all know that they dislike paying claims !

Most puzzling to me, since they have a powerful lobbing presence !

Excellent point. Data says insurance spends 2X as much as autos on lobbying. That tells me "THERE ARE HIDDEN AGENDAS" driving this phenomenon of screens.

From what I know, the auto industry is desperate to change their formula from "selling cars" to "Long Term Service Providers of Mobility." In short, they want what Apple has - a means of extracting revenue from people long after the sale of the hardware. Big Auto isn't getting rich on "selling iron." Just look at Ford's miserable stock chart. So, they are trying like mad to make the iron irrelevant as the pile more and more software, processing, and telematics into cars. That will REQUIRE screens and microprocessors everywhere. Some new cars have as many as 100 microprocessors now. Cameras are being installed aimed at the passengers, cars have undefeatble TELEMATICS that report gobs of information that can be sold at a profit. SPecial diagnostic software is being peddled to repair shops, and so on.

They are evolving the entire "car ownership" experience.

When did "effectiveness" change to "efficacy"?
You may prefer one to the other, but they are pretty much synonyms.

In science and engineering, the sometimes confused terms are efficiency and efficacy.
Efficiency is output/input of the same thing, e.g. power output vs. power input, or energy output vs. energy input.
Efficacy is output vs. input when the input and output are different things, e.g., lumens per watt for a light bulb.

Oh yeah those Flock cameras are a big deal and people are finally catching on to what is going on with them. It is BS...

How about when there is big news they finally DNA solved a horrible crime from decades ago

And it was the same guy they thought did it back then and he's been dead for years

So, I'm listening to NPR this morning, and as always, the announcer says

"Today, expect a high of 80 degrees."

I worked in radio as a DJ for 12 years. One of the cardinal sins back then was to state "Degrees". I mean, hell, OF COURSE it is degrees. What else would it be? Kelvins? Ohms? Yards?

:D

So, with this very lighthearted thread, let us all blow off a little frustration, perhaps have a few laughs, and share some of the things that make us itch in impossible to scratch locations.

One of my all time pet peeves.

Me to young waitress/cashier/etc - "Thank you!"

reply from young waitress/cashier/etc - "No problem."

When did this become the standard reply? What happened to "You're welcome." The implication was "Hey, I was busy, you interrupted me, but it's "no problem".

I'm 41 years old, going on 100. :D

Anything goes, but please, no political or other things the forum rules do not allow.
Also my pet peeve, or even worse “ok”….especially when it’s in an establishment that I’m spending money in…

But, it’s both regional and age related. In the South East US it’s totally common and accepted that if you say thank you the answer is “ok”. Over the last 10 years it’s started to percolate into Canada, but mostly from under 30’s.

I also hate the added inflection to the last syllables that seems a thing now…just shoot me…oh-KAY

All by design, my friend.

Words have been dumbed down (curriculum) and words are how we express THOUGHTS.

George Orwell warned us of this.

Fight the good fight, my dude.
