Which Shure V15 is this?

Finally checked to see which cart came on this Miracord 750 as it sounds so great... and come to find out it says "Shure V15"... but nothing more.

Is this a V15 mark I ?

Shure V15 III with Shure Supertracker stylus.

Yes...that's a Type I. If my memory serves, N44 and N55 styli can be used in that body (edited).

Really? I have a Shure V15 III that is labeled as such and it looks little like this square-edged, solid aluminum bodied thing.

I thought that I read somewhere that the type I was considered unsuccessful at the time because of the large and heavy mounting block, which Shure did away with on the type II. It's a beautiful looking cartridge. How does it sound OP?

To me, it sounds wonderful. I haven't done a critical listen yet, but switching from:

JVC QL-Y5F direct drive
Shure M97x + Jico SAS
HK PM665
KLH model six

To:

Miracord 750 idler
Shure V15 I + original stylus?
HK PM665
KLH model six

Sounded like a rich, musical improvement.

Nice. I recently have been listening to a v15 type iv and have been impressed by it. Shure really had a great run with the V15 series didn't they? Is it wrong that I hope that they'll find their way back to phono?

Properly speaking it is the Shure V 15. Not a Type anything. M 44 and M 55 styli fit and work properly on it.

Fundamentally, what difference is there between M44 and M55?

M 55, had an elliptical stylus and was the better elliptical, tracked at lighter forces than the M 44E one.

On first look and knowing it was on a Miracord, I thought V15 as marked. There are very few items that have a type I as part of their name when new, even when the Type II came out. That old boat anchor on an old turntable, probably close to the best Miracord at the time was probably bought for a penny if bought from a catalog.

Pretty cool looking cartridge and not as common as the later versions which took over the world.

Of course it sounds better than your M97 SAS nailed unit. That isn't one of Shure's better cartridges, just one to keep one available until they left the market. The V15 had actual engineers and probably some folks that could listen well develop it. The M97, I got no idea, maybe a tone deaf computer?
