I have Scott S-10D, 2x S-11D, and S-197.
The earlier ones, 10 & 11 have very well done A.S. with
excellent, heavy cabs like KLH or ARs. When I get my AR2ax going it's Shootout Time!
S-197 had a marketing-committee designed 15" woofer, and cheaper cabs, but still had a nice Philips tweeter.
am i to understand that bass response gets deeper as volume increases? if so, should the cabinets be as large as possible, or is there some threshold where fidelity goes south?

Infinite Baffle like Bozaks, as the volume goes up, bass can go lower. :thmbsp:

ported, as you increase volume, you need to adjust the port to match. :nerd: May or may not make things better.

Acoustic Suspension, is it the damping material that needs tweeking as volume changes?
For very tightly designed speakers, the characteristics of the spider/surround flexibility is important--and should be related properly to the compressivity of the total air volume.
That's one reason to try and keep an original driver working instead of plopping in a new, supposedly 'better', driver...
But in all cases, I think, better bracing of the cabinets helps as you increase volume, and is easy to do.
The ratio of dimensions for boxes comes into play too. But some
truly superb speakers have schemes to deal with internal reflections, modes, and resonance. Look inside a Triad or Vandersteen 5A or non-parallel-sides Sony or big Bozak.
