Great, looks like some a**hole do gooder ruined the score of the century. I just don't get the mentality, sure it was a nice thing to inform the seller of value. But what does one gain from this?

I think one gains a clear conscience....

Not really. I think some people, when they don't get to be the first caller, feel like it's their duty to screw up someone elses incredible deal because they didn't get it. Who has time to educate all the nieve people any way.

 100% accurate...that's incredible to think that someone could have scored 4355s for $300??? I'm sure there are some wicked bummed out people today.

So the real question.. if these are as prestine as the owner says, are those speakers really worth 5 grand?

I do know.. if they are, and if I had that kinda money, I don't think I'd give a second thought....

and come one people.. are we really that bad with karma that we would have gave the guy $300 and ran knowing we took serious advantage of someone? I know I couldn't... It's one thing when it's an estate company selling stuff... they should know how to do business, but for a guy selling his dad's gear, you can tell he has no idea... I would never feel right taking advantage of a person like that... you know some day they will figure it out...

Consiering the way the new add is worded, it smells crap... come on

"To all those people emailing me offering me $100 or $200 over my initial asking price of $300, I'm not mad at ya. It's a tough time economically speaking so I can't blame you for trying to exploit my ignorance. Don't be mad at me, be mad at your fellow brethren who was brave enough to tell me what these were worth."

and all of a sudden

" From my recollection, the speaker boxes/sides are in very nice condition. There were no scrapes or chips or dents. Also, all the speakers are there with no damage or rotting. My father was a meticulous collector. I remember him obsessing over the condition of anything he bought as I was growing up. Quite frankly he obsessed more about his precious stereo equipment more than he did us at times, but that's neither here nor there. Rest assured these are in nice shape "

give me a f'ing break

I did wonder whether it might be somebody having a laugh. My two reasons were:
(a) If he'd had several offers over his original asking price, as he claimed, why weren't they sold?
(b) He writes "This Yamaha stereo stuff is still all in it's original boxes with original documentation, hence why I can list the models below. " which suggests that he may have read that very question, asked in this very thread...

I don't know, maybe peace of mind. Kindness to a stranger. The ability to sleep at night. The knowledge he didn't exploit somebody's ignorance, as referenced in his reply-ad...

While I completely understand the sentiment of this statement I have to wonder how many people would actually walk away from a deal like that so they could sleep at night? Plus, it's not as if someone turned their nose up at the deal because they were drastically under-priced. Someone out there saw a momentous deal, knew they weren't going to get it and decided to inform the seller of the 'actual' value of said item(s). This doesn't exactly strike me as altruistic.

Scenarios like this happen in every hobby and in every industry, everyday, all over the world. It's a zero sum game out there...for everyone 'winning' there is somebody 'losing'. That's just my opinion but that being said I would have been able to sleep at night if I had come across that deal.

a. probably because he had 20 emails within the first hour of posting. I know when I post things on Craigslist I don't get but a few responses and that sometimes takes days because I know the value of what I'm selling up front. He probably read a few and got in contact with the person who told him what they were worth.

b. He might have gotten emails about the models since I specifically remember him making a mistake on the Yamaha listing it as BI instead of B1.

But what about the price... Is 5K about right...? I have never seen these sell before. Just wondering what the going rate is.

:scratch2:

This guy aint fooling anybody, I bet he knew right along how much they were worth. Now he has a whole list of possible buyers at his fingertips.

I doubt it.. not many people able nor willing to whip out 3 to 5 grand for a pair of speakers.. but at 300, any fool would just to make a lot of money.

+1

The Yamaha gear at $1000 is still a damn good buy. If it's really in stated condition, doesn't the B1 alone, if working and mint condition, go for double/triple the asking price?

I know the C-2x goes for $600-900 just by itself and is darn rare. Someone should jump over that if not gone already.

I can tell you what happened. The first person that emailed, asked if he could pickup the speakers on the weekend or something.

The seller then left the ad up. When the next guy emailed, he stated that he is waiting for a person to pick them up. The guy then wrote back telling him they are worth 5k.

I see this happen all the time, usually if you see a deal this good. You need to jump in the truck or go to uhaul rent a truck, run down there, stop by homedepot get a help and run down there. Don't ask the seller to hold them for x amount of days till you have everything together. When I found my patricians for 700$...I drove the 100 miles there as soon as I hung up the phone, granted I didn't get back home till midnight. But I had them in the truck. So no "Do gooder" could tell them their assumed value.

People are strange. Its like if you seen a paragon at goodwill for 100$ would you ask them to hold it for 2 days for you to get a truck?

Basically same as the 4350, right. I would think 5k is about what they would start at on Agon or the Bay. Seems to me I have seen them sold at 6500, and a pair of 4350B's ment for 3750 at the Les Paul auction. It largely depends on forum, seems to me add publisher is looking for an auction

BTW, Sounds like seller has daddy issues, "cry me a river buttercup"

That's why I did it.
A woman was selling her late husband's gear. Wanted to put a new porch on her house.
I couldn't afford to pay her half of what that Garrard 301 was really worth, nor could I in good conscience buy it - or allow her to sell it to someone else - for $50.
So I told her what they go for. She was very grateful.

That's all kool and the gang but once again it's not our responsibility to educate these people. Sure each case is different and in your situation I can see taking the high road and not taking advantage of the widow. But as mentioned before it was probably some a**hat that knew he was not going to get the hook up so he decided to ruin it for everyone else. It just baffles me how people who obviously have computer access (hence the CL listing) can't do a quick simple Google search on their stuff.

I've sold stuff on forums for cheap, and the people would come and pick it up saying, "I really appreciate this. You know you could've asked for a lot more." Some of us just want to get something out of our house quick... no hassle, no fuss. And we are happy making a little money off it. I admit that an asking price 10% of the value is excessive, but I've offered stuff at 50% of its value before - simply because I need it gone that day, and not waiting a month for the right buyer to come along. Not every lowball offer is some naive guy/gal getting screwed over.

And, we've all heard the urban myths about the wife who sells the about-to-be-ex-husband's porsche for $100 to get back at him. Is it bad Karma to pass on that deal, because the price is too low?
