That's all kool and the gang but once again it's not our responsibility to educate these people. Sure each case is different and in your situation I can see taking the high road and not taking advantage of the widow. But as mentioned before it was probably some a**hat that knew he was not going to get the hook up so he decided to ruin it for everyone else. It just baffles me how people who obviously have computer access (hence the CL listing) can't do a quick simple Google search on their stuff.

yeap, all kinds of morals come in to play here. Who do you side with the widow or the flipper that is just looking to pounce on the deal

A "real" pair is worth closer to 10K, particularly if they're in the condition the scammer, or rather seller indicates.

Were this deal real, an agent for an overseas buyer would almost certainly have secured a deal by now with the second step being the removal of the craigsbid ad.

I don't have that much of a conscience considering the area they are supposedly in. Besides, anyone listing on the internet who can't do a little research doesn't deserve to make more than they ask. Everybody's gotta learn someday. Ever watch Antiques Roadshow? It's amazing to see what folks get for pennies on the dollar. Check this out:

How does he have all of that stuff, know how to use the internet, and still need someone else to tell him what it's worth?!

I sold a car once on CL for $200 (it looked ok, but needed a lot of work). I had a shitload of phone calls, some saying they'd give me more. I sold it to the first caller for $200 because that's what I asked for them, even though I was aware I could probably get more.

It was his father's. He is not an audiophile. He made that clear in his ad.

Most people seem to fall into 2 categories when it comes to old audio gear:
They either think it's rare & worth $$$$$$!!!!!!, or they have no idea that it's worth anything at all. How many times have we all heard "What do you want that old thing for?" Or "I just love my Bose Lifestyle System!"

The vast majority of Americans - unlike you - have never used ebay. They have never in their lives even heard of Audiogon. Nor would they have the first idea where to look to investigate the value of old audio gear. Nor would it even occur to them to do so.

Our perspective is warped. We are not normal. It's easy to forget that.

Well crap.. I ran these by my wife, and she wasn't interested in them for 5 large... said they are too ugly for the livingroom.. :tears:

The guy seems nice from his edited post.

I figure it would be easier editing this ad instead of replying back to the forty plus emails individually in regards to my initial asking price of $300 and ithe ad hadn't even been up for 24 hours yet. I have updated my asking price thanks to one kind person who was honest enough to let me know what I have, the value, and the rarity. To all those people emailing me offering me $100 or $200 over my initial asking price of $300, I'm not mad at ya. It's a tough time economically speaking so I can't blame you for trying to exploit my ignorance. Don't be mad at me, be mad at your fellow brethren who was brave enough to tell me what these were worth.

With that said, I still believe the price is fair and should bring about those really serious about buying these speakers. You get your ginormous speakers at a fair price, and I get more money, it's a win-win.

From my recollection, the speaker boxes/sides are in very nice condition. There were no scrapes or chips or dents. Also, all the speakers are there with no damage or rotting. My father was a meticulous collector. I remember him obsessing over the condition of anything he bought as I was growing up. Quite frankly he obsessed more about his precious stereo equipment more than he did us at times, but that's neither here nor there. Rest assured these are in nice shape. I can send pictures or if you want to bring some equipment to try/test it out, be my guest.

Very very well said. In this hobby/career. I have found that to be very very true. I tell everybody, when it comes to audio there are 2 sides, either A is old and worth a ton of cash or B its in the dumpster because they figured no one would want those huge old speakers.

I see this almost everyday, and it is said but its the truth. This goes really for old audio and other older things. Trust me if grandma couldn't talk she would probably be in the dumpster too.

I'm with Rob on this one! Its easy to say that after the fact! But still, I am glad the temptation to take advantage of the guy was not something I was faced with. One side would say, wow I am going to be able to own these knowing I didn't have the money to purchase them at their real value, and the other side would be say, you need to tell this guy what he has!

But also remember, you are not there to give the guy an appraisal. You are there to purchase the item, that is advertised for xxx dollars. My friend had to beat this into my head.

One thing about the hunt for this stuff, is knowing that you can afford something that you normally cannot. Hints to why people look on CL...I can't afford this plasma tv at best buy, but I may be able to find one cheap on CL.

But I guess at the end, if you were rich enough to pay full retail for stuff. Then you could go around and apprise stuff for people.

Another thing in the electronics department, you never never know if this stuff is working or has been tampered with till you get it home.

I don't care much for the moralists viewpoints on this thread.
To me the seller seemed to be showing a bit of disdain in characterizing his fathers equipment as "oversized monstrosity" and not having the least bit of interest in "stereo stuff" his father might have cherished.
What ever happened to good old fashioned Good Luck, Good Fortune, being in the right place at the right time or the receiving end of good Karma?

I doubt it.. not many people able nor willing to whip out 3 to 5 grand for a pair of speakers.. but at 300, any fool would just to make a lot of money.

that's the problem - it wouldn't have been a score for someone, it would have been the "flip of the year" for someone. Shoot - even if someone offered him a grand they could flip for double without putting in much effort. Aside from lifting them obviously...

The "end user" would still have ended up paying normal market value.

And... WOW those are big. :yikes:

And, we've all heard the urban myths about the wife who sells the about-to-be-ex-husband's porsche for $100 to get back at him. Is it bad Karma to pass on that deal, because the price is too low?

Bad Karma to buy it for sure - but perhaps not for the most obvious reason :D
I'd say good Karma to pass - might avoid the same misfortune as the poor bloke without a ride.

This has been a very interesting thread about speakers that none of us have looked at.

With that said I will tell you guys about my little JBL 4350 story. :D

I found an ad on CL for 4350's for 2k 2 months ago in what he called excellent condition. I was the first caller and he told me that he would honor that which he did. He was a retired rock musician and owned them for 30 years. He used them on stage as PA speakers and in his garage studio. He lit them up with 2000+ watts of power night after night.

They were re-veneered about 15 years ago and weren't the prettiest sight. The drivers looked ok and he said they were reconed 10 years ago. The re-painted blue on the baffle really didn't look too hot.

The grill covers were gone but he had old homemade ones that would never make it into my house. The minute I saw them I knew I wouldn't buy them. Super nice guy though. I also play guitar & drums and we talked about music & gear which is our passion for almost an hour. All in all a fun experience.

On a side note he said he bought them at a music shop in Los Angeles in the 70's and the shop said they came from Frank Zappa's Studio! Who knows! :scratch2:

Whose to say that the speakers we're talking about are in any better condition. Especially from a person with no knowledge about them.

Well... that is a thought... and no pictures in the ad doesn't lend confidence. If they are in bad shape, then the price tag will probably come back down almost as fast as it went up once someone takes a look at them and gives him a new appraisal.
