WiiM WiFi Streamer

Did you find some of the cataloguing of the albums was off or weird? When I did it about 4-5 yers ago, sometimes the first song wouldn't be in the album, but on it's own. There was a Chick Corea double album where it was split up and listed as two different artists. I realize this is probably the CD info, but I have yet to go in and fix it.

A few of the CDs that I ripped had similar problems. Mostly anthology or compilation albums.

You're much more likely to find someone with a similar setup over on the WiiM forums, which are quite active.
After more mucking about, the problem finally dawned on me, though I'm not sure why I'm seeing what I'm seeing. I run a VPN on my phone. Turned it off, and my DLNA sources automagically appeared in the WiiM app.

What puzzles me - because I really don't know much about networking - is why I can have the VPN on and the WiiM is still seen as an endpoint.

I also don't understand why two computers running DLNA servers were able to see each other's music libraries, even though they're both running my VPN.

And I don't think there's a way for me to selectively allow the VPN to not see the local server and pass it through, without negating the whole point of running a VPN.

I've found some apps can be helpful for cleaning-up or augmenting whatever iTunes decides to put as the metadata. One good one is MusicBrainz Picard. When there's a lot of cleanup to do, it can get tedious to do it, even though iTunes makes it pretty clean and easy.

..and thinking back toward the original topic, it's interesting to hear about gear that can bring such a catalog out of the computer and into the living room, so to speak. I look forward to hearing more about Wiim and its ilk.

I have used Picard in the past. A slow process, but a very nice program.

I apologize if I missed the comparison, but is the WIIM Pro Plus significantly better than the Pro? I have a Pro which I really enjoy. It's Prime time again.

Key point is that if you are or intend on using an external DAC then the majority of improvements of the plus are not in play for the extra cost.

The plus has an improved DAC and ADC section over the pro, the remainder is identical, if that is important then it is a nice upgrade.

I received an email from Wiim, saying there is 20% off Wiim products during Amazon Prime Day deals, 10-11 October. Not sure if this is just the UK.

Thanks! This pretty much confirms what I thought. I am currently using a Topping DAC with the WIIM with good results. I suspect that I will get the Pro Plus for another system later, but no need to hurry.

Just unboxed the Wiim Pro + and put it in the system. Seamless. It might sound better than the Wiim Pro, just can't tell yet. They're both luscious.

More on the Pro +. Better separation and wider soundstage.
Your positive listening experience is another positive confirmation to go along with the improved measurements people are getting for the DAC and ADC module in the WiiM Pro+. I have not seen any direct comparisons myself between using the internal DAC of the Pro+ against any well regarded external DACs, but I imagine they have made the + much closer to many good externals. It would seem based both on relatively poor measurements, and some negative listening experiences, that besting the Pro internal DAC wouldn't be all that difficult.

To my ears, the difference between the Pro and the Pro Plus is noticeable but not dramatic. I still prefer my Arcam DAC to either of them, but prefer the Pro Plus to my Modi 3+ and Maverick DACs. Will get around to comparing the Pro Plus to my Cambridge DAC in the next few weeks.

A key point is that subjectively, none of them sound bad at all...which is not what one might expect to be the case based on ASR reviews.

The systems used to compare the DACs: Musical Fidelity A3.5+Vandersteen 2CeSignature II, and Sansui AU-919+Thiel CS2+Vandersteen 2W subs.

Hopefully WiiM support can help. My Wiim Pro can access all the files in my Windows music library, which I made visible and named. Majority of files are ALAC.
I am afraid that WiiM support was not very helpful, at least to me. See this response:

"We have thoroughly reviewed your device logs, but regrettably, we are currently unable to access the Windows Media Server files. We kindly suggest that you investigate the Windows side of things to ensure that the Windows Firewall is turned off. Additionally, we recommend restarting the Windows Media Server to address this issue."

I can report that I have tried a number of formats. I can "cast to" my WiiM Pro Pus and my newly acquired WiiM Pro in MP3, WMA and WAVE formats. For FLAC I get an "unexpected device error message" and for MPEG-4 ALAC files I get a "Media Not Supported" message. I believe that fact that I can cast in certain formats means that my Windows Media Server is operating. Would that be correct?

Should I be disabling the Windows Defender Firewall? How do I restart the Windows Media Server? I apologize if I am asking elementary questions, but such is the level of my sophistication.

I'm far from a Windows expert, but I would have concerns about turning off the Defender firewall unless you have another firewall running.

I assume you've seen this:

Are all your music files stored in the same Music folder in Windows?

Also, it might be useful to know if the firewall is the problem. You could turn it off briefly and see if you can stream the FLAC and ALAC files. Don't browse the web while the firewall is off.

Update: After more extended comparisons, I've decided I prefer the Modi 3+ to the DAC in the Pro Plus. The Wiim DAC is a bit warmer, lusher sounding, but I've found that with more complex music the Modi maintains better detail and separation, and overall sounds more "real" to me. I could easily live with either, but since I already have the Modi, I am going to return the Pro Plus and keep using the Pro I already had paired with the Modi. My other Pro will stay paired with the Maverick...not because I prefer the sound of the Maverick DAC, but because of its flexibility in terms of inputs and outputs (I have it feeding two different preamps).

Knowing what I know now, if I was just starting out with a streamer, I would definitely recommend the Pro Plus over the Pro (and over my Bluesound Node 2i) for anyone who wants an integrated streamer/DAC. For those intending to use an external DAC, the Pro is the way to go.

Hi: Thank you so much for your interest! Very much appreciated. Yes. I have turned on streaming using both methods in the material that you sent. Presumably that is why I can cast MP3, WMA lossless and WAVE files. I only have issues with ALAC (my predominant files) and FLAC (my other files). I may try turning off the firewall, but that would not be an ideal solution. I wonder if this could be a Google Mesh issue.
