Woodworking and the tools you use and projects and wood porn.

Where do you live and what kind of security do you have? Just curious!
Therein lies a problem I hadn’t considered until I pulled down the rack to make room for my new obsession, ‘69 bus. Whatever my stash is worth it’s underinsured without a rider. At my local hardwood dealer yesterday 8/4 plantation teak in random widths 4-8” was $56.95 bf :eek2:

Being a furniture guy I want it used to its best advantage which to my mind would be table top or period reproduction. It would yield the most $ in 1 piece guitar backs. Wooden boat restoration prolly would do well to. Oh yeah how to evaluate a stack of unobtainium boards even for insurance.

I'm sure the insurance guys have a table for that...

A little wood porn from my stash of pre-ban Sweitinia mahogani (Cuban Mahogany). Another “Recycler” score from 30 years ago I’ve been saving for the right project. I bought it from the son of the guy that was going to build his own Chris-Craft style cigar box runabout. Just in time for the’64 US import ban. He bought the boat, kept the wood and stored it properly.

It’s all about that buildup of light color cells along the growth ring boundaries.
Beautiful wood!!!!

I'm making a small kitchen dinette table out of Birch 3/4" plywood -- with 2 sheets stacked using Titebond Blue, and using wood screws mainly for even clamping pressure,m since the Titebond is stronger than wood.

One issue I've run into is that it's almost impossible to find 1 1/2" x 1/4" x 48" wood planks to trim the edges. I prefer it just be plain wood planks that I can round off by hand with a sanding block. I'd prefer pine or a softer wood for sanding, but they are almost impossible to find. This might work (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Woodgra...lp_rr-_-n/a-_-0-_-n/a-_-n/a-_-n/a-_-n/a-_-n/a) but I'm not sure how quality the wood is.

If anybody knows of a good source for 1 1/2" x 1/4" x 48" trim -- I'd love to hear it.

you could always use 1 1/2 iron on edgebanding.

Standard 1/2” x 1 1/2” stop molding will work. 7/16 and 3/8 stop widths stops at 1 1/4”. Otherwise it’s custom.

The Home Depot 1/4" x 1 1/2" special order unfinished pine worked okay as trim. It was very unfinished, as in very easy to get splinters just picking it up, but I had always intended to shape the edge trim by hand anyway, so the pine worked well to cap the two stacked 3/4" Birch sheets.

Not the fanciest project in the world, but I built this as a small dinette table for the kitchen to replace a round glass table we've had for probably 20+ years. The round shape was not space efficient at all, and not all that nice, so we are really enjoying the replacement.

I've gone pretty basic, mostly due to space constraints. Circular saw and electric planer set, 2 cordless drills, rotary hammer drill, contractor table saw, jigsaw, a ROS, and pretty much everything else is a hand tool (a couple of handsaws, chisels, that kind of thing). So far, I've been able to do all the renovation work, and if I use the ol' noggin, can probably do everything else.

Last ‘big’ project or just first without using a table saw, planer or electric router??? Only the slider, jointer and bandsaw were used. So far so good slowing down and doing the bench work. Started sanding last night - the first sander died from a bad fall and the second’s pad is barely grabbing and I forgot to order a box of 180 discs. Amazon to the rescue. Arriving today the exact same Makita VS palm sander, Bosch pad, and my favorite Mirka sanding discs. How in the f heck do they do that?

Ironically I have 4 or 5 other sanders that don’t have a vacuum port and the downdraft table is on the block.

whats yr garage audio setup?

After 4 months, downsizing my shop was completed Wednesday. Habitat got it right the second try and picked up my 800 pound cabinet saw. Fittingly the shop centerpiece was last to go. It’s been 45 years since I didn’t have a table saw.

I’m with you brother. Having a wood shop and metal shop since I was 8 years old, at 70, I’m down sizing both.
