WTF is this?

Advents in the utility cabinet - same as the "Large" Advent. Not bad for $65.00, considering they will need that much more in restoration.

Aren't they the slightly newer, "New" Large Advents due to that woofer, which is shared with the Advent/1?

- JP

They are the "Smaller Advent" loudspeakers; basically the New Advent drivers in a somewhat smaller cab. I have a pair and they sound pretty good. They are definitely original.

Yes, they are all Advent components. I've just never seen that combination before. That's not the Small Advent woofer I'm familiar with. - Mark

'Fraid not, you must be thinking of the Advent/1s. However, these are neither the "Smaller Advent (Utility)", which had a very large paper pulp dust cap to add mass to the woofer, nor the "Advent/1" as the speaks in the auction are both a little larger than this and most importantly, have the switch on the back which only the "Large Advent" and "New Large Advent" had, iirc.

The Advent/1 did not use that tweeter, either. - Mark

Nope, they aren't Small Advents.
Small Advents use a disticntive woofer with a 9" frame and giant spitwad dustcaps. They look like Advent/1s to me, just like Charivari said. I've had sets just like them.
FWIW, it should say what they are on the rear speaker connection plate. It's too small to make out in the pics.

Here's a picture of Advent/1 speakers, note that the woofer is the same, but the tweeter is different, as Mark pointed out. That's why I think they're "New Large Advents". If I remember correctly, the "New Large Advent" and the "Advent/1" came out about the same time and replaced the "The Large Advent" and "The Smaller Advent" respectively.

But I'm pretty sure the Advent/1 and the "new" Advent Loudspeaker used the same tweeter, too. We must be looking at an "original" Advent with woofer transplants. I just didn't think the newer woofer was as big as the original. Must be. - Mark

Hmm, it looks like you're right, if this website is accurate.

The New Large Advent

But could it be possible that the auction is for an early example of the New Large Advent, or from very late in the run of the Large Advent so the tweeters or woofers would've been held over or introduced?

I think Charivari naled it, older cabs and tweeters with the slightly later woofers.

I'm with Outlaw 100%.
The cabs are too big for Advent/1s. Somebody just popped the newer woofers into a Utility cab.

I agree with Mark - those tweeters look like the original Advent tweeters.

The ones in the posted pics are the new Advents.

I have two pairs of the smaller Advents that have the same tweeters as
the ones in the auction picture - one set has the green tweets, the other
has the orange tweets.

No, that's the way Utility Large Advents were shipped, after 1976.

The utility cabinets had exactly the same components (orange "fried egg tweeter, metal-bevel-flange baskets, 3 position crossover switch in the back) as the later model "bullnose" Large Advents (ie, those with the rounded-over front edge, as opposed to the early bevelled-edge cabinets, which along with a very few early "bullnose" units, had the masonite-flange woofer).

It's all original. Trust me. I've seen dozens of 'em...

Regards,
Gordon.

Some time ago there was a thread about the late original advents that used the new Advent woofers at the time the new Advents were replacing and tansitioning out the original Advents. A combination of both speakers. This may be a pair of them.

Hey Kam! New forum time!

As the Advent turns, :scratch2: :lmao: :lmao:

All this talk about advents made me start on the second Advent refoam. These are the later "Large Advent" Bullnose
cabinets. Woofer dated Mar 14 1978. Still have a set of early masonite ones to do.

As GordonW stated my late Large Advents look just like those as far as componets and layout.

I'm with Gordon on this one. I had a pair just like that that my brother disposed of while I lived in France for a year.
But for the real relevant question - how can I get my hands on those from Indianapolis?

I think I need to make a retraction. After looking back and forth between my early Advents and the picture in the E-Bay ad the lightbulb went on.

Take your early Advents and use a router or something and trim away part of the masionite ring. then glue a new foam surround on them (the wrong way). Paint the ring black. What would they look like?
