Yamaha Amplifier + Denon Dl160

Hey,
I just bought a yamaha ca810 that I am very happy with. I've noticed that when I play my Thorens td125 w/ dl160 I have to put the volume on the amp up to about 12 o clock to get enough volume for it.

Is this normal?

Sounds like you need a pre amp for your TT.

doesn't sound out of the ordinary. it's a HOMC so you use the MM inputs, but IIRC it probably needs a little extra gain compared to a typical MM cartridge. 12'oclock seems reasonable to me. even with an MM cartridge you may find yourself doing the same thing depending on how the gain of the phono section compares to the line levels of your other components.

What phono input are you using? It appears the dl160 cart is a 1.6mV high output MC cart and you should be using phono1 or phono2 which are 2.5mV inputs.

Sure the -20db muting isn't activated?

I'm using Phono 1. There is a selector for 47X, 68X, and 100X. These have a little symbol beside them that look like headphones (probably some electrionic symbol) and I don't know what it should be set to...I have it on 47X. Will this help?

The -20 is not activated. I try to put up the bass and treble tone control switches and it sorta helps.

Those are the selectable cartridge impedance loads. The dl160 shows it's 47k so you're right on the money. 68k will generally sound a tad brighter, but may be nearly impossible for "old" ears to pick up.

I guess I'm with cdfac on this one, sounds about as right as it's gonna get as your cart output is less than the input spec on the MM phono inputs. I suppose it's quite likely it's even less if the cart body is aged.

Are you aware there's an owners manual for the CA-810 in the AK database? Look for the sticky in the Digital Docs forum.

That sounds about right to me! With a cartridge output of 1.6 mV, the Denon is a bit low when compared to a 4-5 mV for a typical MM cartridge, so you will need to turn up the gain to get the same volume level as a MM cartridge. I wouldn't be too concerned about it!

I used to have a CA-810 and found that running my CX-1000 made a huge difference.That little unit (65watts rms@ 8 ohm) had a great sound but the pre lacked a little in highs compared to my other pre's.I tried a CX-830,CX-800u and a CX-1000. They all made a big difference.

Nominal Phono stages are built around 5 mV input. You are delivering less than 1/2 of that to the inputs. You need to compensate by adjusting the loud knob. You want your phono to be closer to the other inputs, try a Stanton cartridge or another with a 5 mV signal.
