YAMAHA B-3 on the way...to me!

Nontheless, I never used a variac with a vfet amp either, except when powering up the main PSU without anything else...so that the main cans do not go POOF too loud, if they were not powered up in a long time
Yes indeed and thankfully I've never had a POOF yet.;)

this morning the well known DHL Service Guy handover the B-3 at my front door what good start into the day
Unpacking was an easy job as the Japs did a great packing as usual
the Amp arrived in conditions as shown and discribed in the Advertisement
Hooked up the Amp to the necessary equipment and press the ignition button and right after release starts a wonderful Sound out of the JBLs
Very impressive hehehe unfortunately the Show ends after 3-4 min when the Amp switched into red light protection mode
So it was quite a short fun the situation is as expected the Amp needs refit by Heinzemann the Tech
Im wondering why the Amp was doin great job just few minutes and then went into protection mode as said before im not a expert in this field but willing to learn more
What could be the main problem ?
Any ideas or suggestions from the experts in here ?
Staying safe and have a great weekend
Cheers
Wally

Is it a 100 volt unit? If so did you use a step down transformer to go from 120 -100v ?

I hope the v-fets aren’t dead !!

Has your tech ever worked on any V-Fet amps?

If not have him do lots of research , maybe even here

Hello Wally

Difficult to say because the unit is not in front of me
I am sure that the protection mode is activated because there is some DC offset at the output of the channel (defect one)
This DC offset maybe caused by :
- one semi-conductors not working normally
- defect dual FET input IC (2SK100)
-one power V-FET

I don't know this amp very well because they're rare and pretty much special order from Japan in these parts so I've never seen 1 up close. If it were mine I'm thinking first and foremost would be to pull and check the V-FET's; if any of those are toast there may not be any point in going further until you find matched replacements ...

Aloha
Thank you for the Ideas about the B-3 and sure tomorrow ill take the Amp and bring to my trusted Technician Heinz he will check what's wrong with this gorgeous Amp and fix the whole thing if the V-Fets ok
Only can cross the fingers and hope they ok
Well will see what comes out
Cheers

Today morning brought the defective B-3 to the technician to fix the thing
He owns a Sony TA-N7B so he got good knowledge about V-Fet Amps
Well came back home and DHL Guy called said he bring another parcel so unpacking procedure asIMG_20200511_152640.jpg usually - luckly the Sony TA-4650 arrived without any issues
Hooked up the mighty fine Amp and ohhh wonder plays gorgeous with the JBLs after a while its getting better and better nice way to kill time while waiting for the Yamaha B-3
Great buy cause the Amp is a Multivoltage Japanese version just need to set the Jumper no need for stepdown transformer
Must say after half hour listing this Sony's dont need to hide behind the Yamies well will check when the B-3 is back from Service
All in all the Sony is a keeper so in the next few days another 5650 will arrive also thats that's nice hopefully its working too
Cheers

Nice, Hope the Yammy stays alive . I have a Yamaha B2 and my daily driver before that was a TA-4650 Which I had to repair with all new V-fetts.

But I have to say it sounded great for the years I used it but the B2 sounds better to my ears, but its not a real fair comparison as
the Pre amp section of the sony might not compete with the Technics SU9070 pre I am using with the B2.

The sony's switches will need to be thougroughly cleaned to get the most out of it.

And with the Sony's they have some Dual Diodes that need addressing , they fail and so will the V-Fets.

So looks like your tech will be busy after the B3 comes back !!

Greetings, Wally! These are the docs that I have regarding the circuits of the B-3. Wish you success in your endeavor. Keep me posted with this and give me a positive reply soon regarding your B-3 ( too bad that you had no time to enjoy this special amplifier).
