Yamaha CA-1010 Major Restoration

I just came into possession of the same amp (with the separate tuner (610)). Someone throwing it out by the side of the road in my neighborhood. I have a reasonable electronics background, nothing profound and never anything this large, but eager to take on the project. So I have a quick question about sourcing the replacement caps and Tr's.
Someone threw the amp out because they considered it worthless or not worth repair. Suggest best work out what is wrong with the amp before spending money on caps etc... Suggest build a Dim Bulb Tester, google, numerous plans on AK, it's just a incandescent bulb in series with the active AC power.. Use DBT (40-70W bulb) to power up then do basic health check on power supply etc...
Best to start your own thread with any issues, plenty of AKers to help out if you have the right attitude...

I'm a nooby here so good advice. I've run the boards with my tone generator and scope and signal fails at the control board. So it's definitely worth doing some more discovery and spending some time in my shop doing some recaps. Just for fun, which is really my interest. The owners were going through a purge and I don't think they knew what they had or didn't care when they put it at the curb. A lucky find.

I typically stock parts like Semiconductors and some caps, but for large restoration projects like this, I make up a BOM and order everything on the list. Most of the time I don't need to each part in bulk, places like Mouser and Digikey typically allow you to buy in multiples of one. Of course if you're planning on doing multiple restorations you can save money by buying in bulk. Unfortunately the spreadsheet I have for this is incomplete and may not match the list I included throughout this thread. I'd recommend following Super Noob's bill of materials and cross reference with the lists I provided in this thread. Many of the parts are identical, with the big changes in components being in the amplifier section. If I remember correctly, the power supply, tone board, and most of the preamp have the exact same components with the exception of a few extra caps on the preamp board in the 2010 that aren't populated in the 1010 board. Hopefully this helps you out!
Awesome. That helps. Thanks. I started the cross reference and it's a bit overwhelming but I'm in no hurry.

Interesting. Next week ill pull the Amp Boards and have a look and let you know. Could be a printing error too of course.

Hello all, I feel it's about time that I sit down and document my major restoration to my Yamaha CA-1010. This year I have done 6 major restorations on these units, 2 of them being on its big brother, the CA-2010, that has a lot in common. For those that need more info on the 2010 restoration, I'd recommend you to view Super Noob's excellent restoration thread on his 2010, a thread that I got quite a bit of knowledge from. You can find it here, https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/project-yamaha-ca-2010.899468/ .

Here's the unit in question. Very nice overall condition.

IsvbxlS.jpg

Taking the metal shield off the preamp, we can get a better look at the condition of the boards. Unit appears to be all original, no parts replaced. Filter cap tops are definitely bulging, measuring them with my Atlas LCR, they measure just below 12000uf each with 0.1 ohm ESR, definitely not anywhere close the 18000uf nominal capacitance.

LXh4yRV.jpg

Taking a look at the amp board, the obvious suspects are here, discoloration on the PCB due to the massive amount of heat this board sustains when the unit is run in class A operation. The typical corrosive glue on the larger caps is also present.

QVsGovF.jpg

First order of business for me is to get rid of the horrible original binding posts, these are some of the worst 70s binding posts that I have run into, very picky when it comes to what wire you can use with them and of course, no support for banana plugs or spades. This will be fixed by a direct fit set of 5 way binding posts from Germany.

gHL0kyk.jpg

I used audioquest solid core wire to create the new jumpers for the negative terminals on the new terminals.

VdzrekU.jpg

Much better, and no cutting of the chassis required.

The Power supply is next, here's a BOM for the parts I used for rebuilding the PSU, Again, big thanks to Super Noob who provided the BOM in his CA-2010 restoration. Here the same parts apply as both units have the same power supply.

Some more evidence of just how much torture class A operation does to these units, Large transistors in the power supply really got toasty.

Power Supply all done.

I'll now pull the amps out of the unit. This will allow me to get to the filter cap board easier. Faceplate is removed now as well.

One thing to note here, definitely reflow all joints to all of the input jacks, these units are notorious for losing inputs due to cracked solder joints on the input jacks themselves.

Amp Assembly before restoration.

Outputs remounted to a clean heatsink with new micas and compound.

Complete amplifier assembly after restoration.

Meter board was also recapped, unfortunately I have no photos of the board before and after.

dlKECXG.jpg

Underside of the unit before reassembly, main fuses lowered from 10 amp to 7 amp for further protection, amp at startup draws max of 3.5 amps so this should be no issue.

dC2gXz9.jpg

All reassembled and passing the smoke test with flying colors. Now comes bias calibration and a listening test thereafter. I always keep all the original components in bags related to their respective boards in the unit to document proof of the restoration.

snrPk26.jpg

First listening test at home with my Vandersteen 2Ce signatures and Aerial 10T MkII, both sound great with this amp. Despite the vandersteens being notoriously power hungry, especially when it comes to bringing out the low end, this 1010 does a very respectable job of bringing that low end out on them.

A beauty shot of this incredible piece after restoration.

Any input you all have on this restoration would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently in my Junior year of college studying electrical engineering and I love to devote the little free time I have to this hobby and restoring various pieces of equipment.
Very nice work on the CA-1010. I will be looking at one for sale tomorrow but the right meter and light are out. He said the sound works on the right and that it is hooked up so I can test it to make sure. He has it listed for $500. Will this be an easy fix or is it a major repair?

Lights are easy in these, just need “grain of wheat” style bulbs. As for the meter, it’s hard to say. I’ve never seen a meter go bad in these, but it’s certainly possible. I’d check the meter selector switch as it’s possible that may be dirty and causing the meter to not function. 500$ is a good price for a 1010 if it’s in good shape.

I was able to pick up the CA-1010 for $450 and have purchased a CT800 receiver. I cannot wait to get both service and hocked up to my JBL L100 Centurys.

Hello, dear forum users! I don't know English well, so I apologize. I can’t find many transistors and would like to know. does it make sense to change everything except transistors? Or can you find other analogues? I only installed MJE transistors.
The power filter board is missing a transistor; after TR217 comes TR219. he's missing a pair. Was this how it was intended?

Looking over a CA-1010 for a friend. Is the Class A bias 280mv as in the manual? The amp was recapped by a local shop and Class A was set at 150mv. Just wanted to double check before to make sure there wasn't a service bulletin or something.

280mV is correct. It does run seriously hot and I have at times lowered it to keep the heat down a bit. The amp doesn’t really have adequate airflow for that level of heat IMHO.

Outputs remounted to a clean heatsink with new micas and compound.

Complete amplifier assembly after restoration.

Meter board was also recapped, unfortunately I have no photos of the board before and after.

Underside of the unit before reassembly, main fuses lowered from 10 amp to 7 amp for further protection, amp at startup draws max of 3.5 amps so this should be no issue.

All reassembled and passing the smoke test with flying colors. Now comes bias calibration and a listening test thereafter. I always keep all the original components in bags related to their respective boards in the unit to document proof of the restoration.

Great work, a bit overkill but ymmv. You should also post the step by step of how to disassemble each pcb and difficulties you encountered taking it apart.
