Was the Yamaha CR-1020 a top of the line receiver from the Yamaha line at the time?

How about the CR-2020, and CR-1000?

Nice receiver to say the least.....I have been keeping an eye on one, but I have yet to see one for sale...

But the CR3020 was a replacement.....Does that mean, the CR-1020, CR-2020 were top of the line until they were repalced by the CR-3020?

The 3020 as best I understand it was an interim model between the CR-2020 era and the CR-2040 era. I guess by the CR-xx40 era, the power wars had ended (killed off by the vagaries of the economy of the time).

The CR-1000 was the top of the receiver line prior to the CR-xx20 line.

The R-2000 was top of the R-xx00 line (after the xx40s).

I am not sure where you are getting the replacement info from. The 3020 was the "big brother" to the 1020 and 2020. Very few were produced and they are highly collectable.

Here is what I read:

An extremely rare sibling to the very successful CR-1020 and CR-2020. More nifty features, even more power, improved specs, a 63cm width (!) and 37kg in toto - a "monster receiver" in every sense of the word, but a beautiful one!

I have the CR-1020 and I love the way it sounds with my Infinity Kappa 7.1 speakers.....I can't imagine how would the others sound....

My next purchase will be a CR-2020...

Strange Seattle sighting on craigslist ....

One passed by Seattle a few months ago. I didn't get it though.

Odd story: guy said it was left behind by a renter who took off on him and he just wanted a couple hundred bucks to help pay the utility bills.

He lived across the sound and said he would bring it in to the waterfront where he worked and could plug it in there.

I looked it up then --- over 80 lbs!

I was never sure of the CR-3020 position in the Yamaha line at that time...

Archie had it right, the 3020 fell between the CR-n20 and CR-n40 lines. Frex, it adopted (or set) the case style for the CR-n40s - top and sides but no bottom, The CR-n40 were also imitation copies of the Macassar Ebony on the 3020. In addition the 3020 used several components that matched parts in the CR-n40 lineup, speaker connectors, etc.

I recently paired my large advents to a CR 1020 and now I don't want to leave my room The sound and clarity is something to behold. I'm a Pioneer junkie but MAN!! The sound and build of the CR series is hard to resist. The siver face and brushed silver of the CR 840, Gives you the 70's vintage sound with a modern look that's hard to beat.
The varible loudness control is a great addition IMHO:yes: So where is the dedicated Yamaha site:scratch2:

Yes. The 2020 and 3020 were both TOTL Yamaha receivers - 1020 never was, AFAIK - which should answer OP's question.

In defense of the poor CR-1020 understand that it used all the same boards as the 2020. It used the same tuning head. In the power amplifiers it used everything the 2020 did except for the outputs and the drivers. The power supplies were so similar that Yamaha made some errors on the 2020 schematics because they were basically a copy of the 1020 schematics. Lastly the 2020 had an MC pre-amp while all the slots on the 1020 main board were left unpopulated. Thus it is possible to add an MC pre-amp to the 1020 if you can find the ICs - I know because I have done it.
