Yamaha integrated better than receiver?

Any sonic differences between the Yamaha integrateds (ie CA 1010, CA 2010) and receivers (ie CR-1040)? I have a CR 1040 that I think is great and was wondering if the 1010 is worth trying...

I have the generation earlier ( CR-1000 & CA-1000) and I can't hear a difference. The integrated does have the Class A capability if that is what you want.

Can't help you with specifics, but here's a discussion I've had with a few folk regarding integrateds and receivers-

starting arguements are usually-

receiver, pro- shorter "built-in" signal paths to innards, no external cables

receiver, con- "noise" do to more elements (tuner) stuffed in case

integrated, pro- less innards to cause interference

integrated, con- external cables may add noise do to longer signal paths

Dunno if anyone has ever heard a difference between like-minded models of receivers and integrateds, though.

My personal thoughts are it's nominal, at best.

Does your receiver have class "A" performance? That might be the only "big" upgrade.

I've got a 610 and two 810s. Love 'em.

Must compare apples to apples and there are few receivers built directly from the separates. Usually when you find them there are compromises if no where else then with the power supply and also usually also compromised as to inputs, etc. A few receivers based on separates include:
Marantz 18 - 20/7t/15
Marantz 19 - 20b/33/16
Fisher 600T - TFM300/TX300
Sherwood 8000 - S5500/S3000 (suffix will depend on version)
McIntosh receivers are not based on separates but their tuner/preamps were combinations of their tuners and preamps.
The Marantz 2230 is off the 1060 and I think the 104 tuner but, not sure as to the tuner.

I am sure there are many more.

To answer your question you'd need to side by side them.

My CA-1000 definitely sounds brighter than my CR-1020. They are fairly close in specs, I believe, but handle sources and speakers much differently. I have found:

1) The CA-1000 Integrated works best with CD player and NS-1000M's. Incredible detail at ALL volumes, with enough adjustment to round the sound to suit you. Of course, the better the CDP, the better it sounds.

2) The CR-1020, along with my Dual TT, a CDP, or in FM mode and just about any speaker, comes across warmer and more forgiving. Just a fantastically clean, powerful, 70's sound.

Either way, you just can't go wrong!
