Yamaha PC4002M 2 ohms?

Hi all, I have a Yamaha M85 and now I have a addiction, I was wondering which off the old Yamaha Pro amps can drive 2 ohms safely. The one I want specifically is the Yamaha PC4002M. Many thanks for replies.

the manual says to keep it at 4 Ohms or above. it does have short-circuit protection but the manual doesn't say at what level it trips (for some amps, it's around 2 Ohms). with the cooling capability it has, i think you'll be fine, and i doubt you'll trip the short circuit anyway. can you describe your 2-Ohm load in a little more detail?

cdfac, these are my thoughts too.
One can't go wrong with a PC4002M or Yammi Pro amp in general, gobs of power, impressive look, easy to maintenance and sweet, sweet sound.

Since I'm using Pro Amps, all these Home-Hifi amps seem weak and thin-skinned to me.

Unless you intend on beating the hell out of it at 2 ohms, it will be OK... most likely your ears will give out first...

For 2 ohms, if Yamaha doesn't recommend it, I'd be careful about pushing it too hard.

Thanks for all the answers, sorry for the late reply I am on UK time.

Ok, I will be using it on a pair of Infinity RS 4B and in the future hopefully a pair of RS 2B's.

The M85 is great with the RS 4Bs, I had hoped that the 4002 would be in the same league if not higher than the M85. I would have thought it was but its hard to tell from the information I have seen. I know most of the Pro amps had a home version but I still dont know what the home version of the 4002 is.

As you can see from my moniker "Infinity Sadist"... I like my big Infinitys... if you are only driving one pair at a time of either the RS4b's or RS2b's, the yammie will be fine... they are no where near as brutal as my Kappa 9's...

The 4's and 2's bottom out close to 2 ohms, but do not average that value, so they are not as hard on amps as the Kappa 9's.

If you are looking a pro amps in general... take a look at a smaller Crown MacroTech... otherwise, I'd steer you toward a Krell, Aragon, Bryston, Threshold...

the P3500 manual states that protection is for loads below 2 Ohms, so that probably goes for the 4002M as well. usually these drops are for a brief part of the frequency spectrum, so unless you are doing extended test tones or have a wicked bass line that stays put right on the problem frequency, it probably won't trip the protection.
