I'm certain we've been down this road before in these Music Forums, but I am also (somewhat) certain that I did not suggest in a previous "favorite rock drummers" thread (threads?) either of the following gents, each of whom I have lately come to appreciate tremendously via their "live" work with their respective bands:

Mick Avory - The Kinks
Charlie Watt - The Rolling Stones

In each instance, the "less is more" and "jazz feel" approach of these fine musicians result in a mode of percussion accompaniment that's uncharacteristically "musical" for the rock music genre. I am particularly fond of Avory's work, but that may be attributable to the context, R. Davies' theatrical song craft vs. Jagger-Richards' blues swagger.
 
As a former drummer, I'll second some of these:

Bill Bruford: An excellent technical drummer and dead-on rhythm.
Simon Phillips: Explosive and fast feet to boot.
Ginger Baker: In addition to his early and current jazz work, his brief visit with Masters of Reality was very memorable. The song "She Got Me When She Got Her Dress On" is absolutely kicking rock and roll.
Phil Collins: A very versatile and talented drummer--excellent work with Brand X. On one of his last Genesis studio recordings, "Living Forever" is a great example of his jazz/rock drumming.
Steve Gadd: Great work in jazz and rock, and one of his best pieces ever is Steely Dan's Aja.

A unique honorable mention: Bev Bevan plays what I call "heavy drums". He dragged a bit on some recordings, but a solid foundation to many of ELO's rekkids.
 
Yup...every guy who's picked up a check for a Steely Dan session gets the nod...Steve Gadd & Bernard Purdie lead the pack there. Charlie Watts is the glue that holds the Stones together, and I've gotta agree on Bev Bevan. He POUNDS.

I must admit to sucking though - I still don't get Charlie.

Prairie Prince (The Tubes. Yes! The Tubes! Those guys don't get nearly enough recognition. Yeah, their shows were jabbered about endlessly, but how many critics listened to the musicians? As musicians, The Tubes were one of the best groups of the 70's and early 80's. Listen to the "White Punks On Dope" LP all the way through and tell me these guys weren't more than just competent players)

i will say that Neil Pert didnt do well in Jazz...

Being able to play straight up Jazz, jazz fusion and rock is a must...

Yeah but their new drummer is Keith Carlock and he blows 'em all away. He hasn't been with them long enough to have played on a studio album but I've seen them live twice with Carlock and he's tremendous... came from the jazz "college" at U. of N. Texas.
