Your Speakers and Your Wife

^^^P.S.: I read the list of that magnificent lineup. Now pics are even more essential, especially for the Micro Seiki! . Years ago, I sold Grace, and still have a 747 Tonearm, and we also sold the Dark Star turntable when the company was relatively new.

The odd thing about my wife and I, WAF, and speakers is the sudden screech of brakes just before colliding with a black hole from which we emerged commingled somehow, in odd ways. She was very indulgent toward the hobby until I brought the Klipschorns home. She went on and on with "they're too big" for a few days, but eventually became accustomed to them, even loved them because they sounded great and were a good place to display your art, or decorative taste. When I replaced them - well, she still loves the missing Khorns, and will only grudgingly admit that the small towers I chose even sound good at all. So now I'm the small-speaker fan, and she's the big. Unexpected. Go figure. HAF anyone?

That sounds like the less talked about, "Horizontal Surface That Can Hold **** Factor".
My wife has it, and oddly enough it came from her dad. It's not a gender specific thing.

It can drive me nuts. Get the music playing at a healthy volume and stuff starts to rattle.
I often just move stuff off while listening if I hear it.

Or not. One time I had the house to myself and the tunes got loud. I forget what it was, but it rattled right off the top and crashed and burned on the floor.
Me: "Sorry, but your ________ fell off the speaker and broke."
Her: "How did that happen?"
Me: "I had the volume up, and it rattled right off."
Her: "How loud did you have it?!"
Me: "Well, it was loud enough to rattle your crap off the top of it. Maybe we should keep the knick-knacks on a proper shelf."

Oh yeah, I've received more than a few eye-rolls from the wife. The worst was when my Dad gave me is set of Lynnfield 500Ls -- they're not huge, but they're certainly not small! She was so mad. Almost strained her relationship with him more than me...

So, I leveraged that when a nice set of RBH 641-SEs popped up on BarterTown. Look, honey! They're smaller than the Lynnfields! So she was totally supportive of that purchase...

That’s why they invented planar speakers.

My wife, though extremely tolerant of my beloved pastime, absolutely hated my Magnepans. For a short while I had a surround system with baby 'pans also. She hated them! When I got the big JBLs she exclaimed "I didn't think it was even possible! These look even worse!!"

Whatzat mean? Hal Appeal Factor? The top return on one of those acronym definition sites is "Hot As F***" :).

Just for fun, I think you should test her fondness for the K-horns...tell her you're having second thoughts and the guy that bought them is willing to sell them back. Pay close attention to her pupils to gauge her immediate reaction. And brace for a smack upside the head.

She'd be all for it as long as it's all on my dime.

I've read that women have a much more acute sense of hearing than men, so none of these "she loves 'em ... now" stories surprise me.

Ya, my wife has this disease, but it gets worse. She suffers from the "I kind of put this on the table, but left 40% of it hanging off the side, and if you so much as breathe on it, it will fall off and you will be held responsible" disease. Boxes, books, laptops... it doesn't matter. NOTHING gets placed securely.

15 years in and still no known cure, other than picking up whatever item and putting it securely on the table.

She has to walk past and look at the 14x16 spare bedroom I'm using for this hobby.
The day after I put big beautiful decay treatments on the wall over the sofa I came home to find a very heavy (like 40 pounds I would say, really) hand made quilt over them.
With flowers on it. She said the flowers will like the music.
Should I let her know that it appears the quilt did more for the sound than the traps?

I was constantly telling my wife not to put crap on top of my Altecs, and when the Allisons came home I just told her anything that I found on them would go straight in the trash.
Now she puts crap on top of the stereo rack. My life would suck without her though.

i am so lucky that way
she enjoys the music and requests it
i have 13 speakers in the living room atm
2 energy veritas 2.3i
2 12" velodyne subs
2 yamaha ns 1000 on top of those
thats the 2 chan set up

surround is 2 mission 770
and a polk center
2 polk rti 4 ceiling mounted

2 little andrew jones SP-BS22-LR tucked away on the floor for demoing stuff

these get switched with kef 104/2 and kef 105/2 some times
she never complains
she cant put stuff on the veritas ... they have rounded tops
she has put stuff on the yammies but is figuring out it will eventually vibrate off
placement is not optimal for the yammies ... but we have to live here too
thats not to mention the gear to run this stuff

i cant complain about her artsy craftsy stuff all over the house tho :)

I feel extremely lucky to have the wife I married 33 years ago. At my house I have a dedicated music room no knick knacks no pictures of grandkids, just stereo equipment. the only thing that sets on my speakers is more speakers . My wife and I both enjoy music, she just doesn't enjoy loud music, so when she is gone I start cranking the music up. I have rattled pictures off walls in rooms throughout the house plus nick-nacks off of shelves
