Your Speakers and Your Wife

The funny thing is that my wife was actually upset when my Yamaha cabinets were destroyed. Although she never said so, I always thought she felt that they were too big and in the way... Then again, she doesn't spend much time in the music room. Maybe they never got a chance to bother her.

My wife and I have a great understanding........big speakers will leave our house on the same day as our side by side fridge. So far she hasn't taken to the idea of getting our food fresh from the grocery 3 times a day, so I think my L1230s and SDAs are safe, after all, why have a huge fridge when the grocery will keep them fresh for free?

I wonder if some of you guys with 90 eleven pairs of speakers would have a better relationship with your SO's if you had only one pair of really good speakers regardless of size.

BTW: I'm in agreement with theophile and Vinylcafe.

Or theophile and Vinycafe's wife. :scratch2:

Good point! My wife wasn't too happy when I had a whole bunch of speakers in the garage. I didn't collect them intentionally and didn't think much about them until she asked me what I was going to do with all the speakers. I looked at them and said, " Holy crap! I didn't realize I had so many!" I quickly sold the ones that fetched a few bucks and gave the rest away. That helped a lot. :thmbsp:

I just remind her that we are in this for "better or for worse". It just happens that with speakers that my better is her worse.......:D

I don't know much about women, but one thing I do know is that it doesn't pay to antagonize them. If one is to have repeated dealings with them, by all means don't allow yourself to be pushed around by anyone, but don't intentionally antagonize a woman.

Unless you want a divorce. Remember, she'll probably be awarded your testicles. :yikes:

Honestly the size of the speakers have never been an issue, but keeping the original boxes for each piece of audio gear including the huge speaker boxes safely covered in plastic bags taking up most of our attic has come into conversation more than once.

Here's a thought:

Most packaging material is manufactured as a flat item, then folded and glued/stapled/both into a container. Why not see if you can store them flat? Even if this doesn't mean completely unbinding the container just undoing the top and the bottom and concertinaing the sides. Can you picture my idea?

Some of you guys have enough gear to open a store. This is not a value judgment. It's just an observation.

There are plenty of SO's that have a problem with any speaker larger than a Bose cube. However, for many of the posters here I don't think it's so much the size of the speaker it's the numbers. How many actually listen to ten different pairs of speakers or seven receivers and five TT's?

Constantly swapping gear in and out has always seemed to me it's because you're not satisfied with what you're using. One good system is all I've ever wanted. However, I admit to having more than one. After 48 years of buying selling and upgrading I've managed to collect a few pieces of gear. This has never applied to speakers. I switched to panels for "my rig" in 1976 and even I realize that collecting "room dividers" is a bit much. Sure, I've got a couple of pairs of small (Advent Mini, Minimus 7) speakers. They are in use in my bedroom and library systems. The Advent Mini's I bought for a girlfriend who decided she wanted something like a Bose Wave Radio. I gave her a Cambridge Soundworks Ambience and she's as happy as a pig in slop (no offense intended Mr. Pig). The Minimus 7's were originally on the rear deck of a long gone Camaro. As I said, I collect music not gear.

Given the choice of a bunch of GW, CL and garage sale speakers or one pair of really good ones, regardless of size, guess which way I'll go? I suppose it has to do with ones attitude. The only thing I actually collect is music. Even then, I'm not into multiple releases of the same recording. One good copy is sufficient for me.

None of this is intended to put down collectors. It's just a difference in outlook. I've always preferred one or maybe two really good "whatever's" over a collection of mediocre "whatever's".

After they get over seeing four full range ESL's in my room the two comments that I hear the most from first time visitors are, "You still have records" and "You've got a lot of records".

With all that said; Were I a collector and had the space and funds I'd have a pair of IRS Beta's, Magneplanar Tympani 3's, Apogee Studio Grands, ML CLS2's.... and a closet full of high end amplifiers to drive them.:D

I'm one of the lucky ones . I have a finished cellar, and retired. My wife still works and belongs to groups. So, daytime and a few nights a week she is gone, that's enough time for me to have some fun and crank it up.

Like in most households, SHE is the one wearing the trousers and calling the shots here :)

I remember her ranting being so non-stop when I had some towers (Polk Audio RTiA7) that I had to get rid of those and do bookshelf speakers instead!

I'm lucky. The Cornwalls came in and never left and she never said a word about them. The only thing she brings up are the two pair in the closet I don't use and she is right about that. If I could just sell those I could buy the TT of my dreams...

Although I'm currently single I've been married twice. While both marriages ended neither ending had anything to do with my system. I made it quite clear from the beginning of both relationships that having and keeping my stereo was not open to negotiation. "Take me and my "room divider" speakers or forget the whole thing."

A marriage is supposed to be a partnership with give and take. There is/was no way I'd do all the giving. Unfortunately all too many females aren't willing to do any giving where home décor is concerned.

Got that right, reason I have a finished cellar, with full bath. I can lock myself away and not be bothered.

It is never healthy to give the other partner(regardless of gender) a 'total-overrule' position on any subject within a relationship. I can understand why there might be 'no-compromise' type issues within a relationship because there are some things that we all will not do for anyone. The shared space that we live in should not be one of them. Allowing for an agreed level of cleanliness in these shared areas, the usage, contents and changes of the shared living areas should not be the overrule of one partner's and should always be respected by both partners as shared space.

All of the above is completely dependent upon a relationship of mutual respect. I believe than when one's partner is openly dismissive or sneering at the other's choices, then it has slid from a partnership based upon mutual respect towards a degree of attempted domination.

However, if someone chooses to be dominated; That's their choice.

I agree with a lot of what you say. I don't like having extra pairs of speakers or extra gear laying around - it takes up valuable space that could be better used for other things, or it could be in the way of good sound quality. Perfect example is having multiple speakers in one set-up - after living with systems that only have one pair of speakers in them with very little in the way of the sound, I can't live with stuff being in the way or creating reflection points. The sound is so much better when there isn't a whole bunch of stuff around.

cheers mate! Life is good. :thmbsp:

BTW... pretty sure the "I'm retired" disclaimer wasn't necessarily necessary. Anyone that uses the term 'cellar' ...well..that's a given. ;)
