Z19 Crossover

Bill, I really like this approach. This crossover is on my list of projects I want to do. Has been since Zilch first started working on it. Sure do miss him.
 
I would like to build this. The layout is on page four of this thread - that I know. Is the schematic on Lansing Heritage the final/correct one? Thank you.
 
I'm not building the Z 19 version, the jury is still out on that one. This is a copy of the factory Model 19 crossover. As luck would have it, after I purchased all the parts for this, a set of DC Lab's Z 19 crossovers became available on Barter Town for a great price. Since it's a copy of Zilch's crossover, when I'm done I can compare the two.
I also collected a big pile of vintage oil filled caps, I'll be able to swap them in the circuit fairly easily on my set of crossovers.
Lots to keep me busy this winter.

When time allows after assembly, do you mind posting a schematic? I want to build only the HF section as I have the tools/equipment to test and match the LF section.
 
I would change the Os to an R or Ω (alt234) on resistors R1, R2, R3 and R7 in the layout diagram to avoid future confusion and for uniformity with standard naming values.

I've built a great pair of speakers with a pair of 416 8a's, a pair of 806's on 811b horns. I used some off the shelf Eminence crossovers and I've sourced the parts and laid out my crossovers. I have not used my schematics 'skills' in a few years and I would just like a confirmation that my wiring diagram follows the original circuit. I've made the circuit a single input, so mine is not biampable. Aside from that difference, can someone please confirm? I've gone through it twice, and can't find anything amiss... Just Google Altec Model 19 Crossover or Altec Z19 for the schematic.
If you compare the two, they are almost identical, he adds a 4uF cap to the HF and separates both the HF and LF for biamping. It's just some very minor mods to the stock crossover.

Sure looks like it. I have a post over at the Altec Host Board on the parts list I used for the Model 19 crossover, just search for it. Just need to add the 4uF cap. Of course you can use other parts as well, just stay close to the component values.
Remember that when the original Altec crossovers were being manufactured, the component tolerances were pretty large, so getting close tolerance parts that are close to the original specs will work fine.

Thank you. I have been here since before we lost Z, so you can appreciate the need for clarity while slogging through the plethora of associated/conflicting/off-topic posts littered all over the landscape. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm sure I'm also guilty. lol
 
I've been working on this a bit. Have most of the wiring for the LF done, all in 12 GA and just started on the HF section, all in 14 GA. Using solid wire so i can bend it nicely. More work than i thought it would be, for sure. Picture is crappy cell phone pic, looks nicer in person.

I'm a big fan of turret board construction myself. I actually made these out of 1/8 thick electrical grade fiberglass and used 8-32 x 3/4 brass screws as post. Locked the screws to the boards with brass nuts and bronze star lock washers.
I did the layout on 1/4" grid paper to get everything where I wanted, wrote the X-Y coordinates and drilled the holes in a Bridgeport using a carbide drill. Yes, it's a lot of work but it's the way I tend to build things.
This week I should be able to finish them up. Can't wait to try them out.

Bill, have you had the chance to compare the Z19 to the pseudo 19 crossovers you have assembled? I recently picked up a set of valencias that I really want to try bi-amping. and would love to hear your impressions on the two.
 
Once the Z-19 is broke in, I think it is a great sounding component. The Z-19's I build are all film cap made and build them with and without bi-amping capability. I found the transient capability to be somewhat better with the Z networks. I think the original iron core inductors could be improved on....and was!

Just amazing that this just keeps on going. But, I suppose as long as there are the constituent drivers available... I read through the whole thing as I await the onset of my second tryptophan coma in as many days. It makes me want to find some Altec horns and BMS drivers so I can build this.
