Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

EconoWave is fun, no matter how you do them. I have built them in old cabinets, new cabinets, even with no cabinets.

All of the EconoWaves I have built that ended up keepers have the waveguides mounted on the baffle. That is my way of doing it. I don't want the WG to move even an inch, cause that can cause problems with time alignment, comb filtering, etc. Others are pleased to just sit the WG on top of the cabinet. If that suits them, more power to them

The best part of EconoWaves is that you can build them YOUR way. Then, they are truly your speakers.

Thanks. To date maybe, but I think somebody will up the ante again in a post or 2.

It's amazing how many of my designs have been dictated by what drivers I had on hand or were on clearance, etc. If you've got a dozen small woofers but no big woofers... Like they say, "when the only tool you have is a hammer, all your problems begin to look like nails."

Can you tell us how the E'Wave part sounds, Ray, please, the upper mids and highs?

I've never heard them in true freespace anechoic like that, without any reflections.... :dunno:
 
The upper end is definitely the best part. I messed around some with the pot and unhooking this or that. The EWG sounds great. It's really clear, especially outside like that. However, I think those little woofettes might have a peak or something happening around or a little above the XO frequency. With just the EWG things were very crisp and distinct, but with all the drivers on it got a little honky in the midrange. No fault of the waveguide, just the combination. I'll have to get the measurement gear out to see where I need to go with it.

Most of the woofers I've seen used in this thread are starting to fall off around the XO. These little guys are really just hitting their stride so I'm sure I'll have to do some tailoring.

Jack and I both have the mid/high combo PT waveguides for experimentation. I believe he posted a pic earlier in this thread.

I loaded mine up and the mids were an insane 107 dB. Haven't figured out how to handle that yet. For some reason, I can't get decent measurements off them, either. Not enough room? :dunno:

In any case, they're not "Econo," more like $125 apiece.

Maybe Dave can design a "Unity" thingus.... :thmbsp:

Wayne over at the Pi site has a "mid horn" plans I've thought about using,
its designed for a 10 inch mid range, I though ( and purchased ) a set of JBL 2123H 10 inch mids I someday intend to do this with.

As for Bass, the one that always got my attention was the "exemplar", which looked like a big horn box on front, but like the A7, the back of the woofer chamber was ported.

My wave guides and compression drivers arrived today. Now to figure out what to use for cabs and woofers.

I'm excited.
