I have a small issue with memory some times.
Like this morning I dragged out all of the scrapers, solvents, swabs, adhesives, cutters and various misc accoutrements to re-foam a pair of LA woofers for this project, only to find that at some point I had already re-foamed the pair I thought I had to do. So as not to waste the opportunity I removed a different pair of LA woofers from some other cabs and did those.

BTW, I have 2 pairs of the woofers out now. Both are all-metal frames and have round magnets. One pair has no frame numbers. One pair has codes that indicate manufacture by Jensen (220) in either '73 (unlikely) or '83.
We suspected that Jensen provided some replacement woofers but I had never found one with EIA code numbers on it.
In another thread GordonW identifies the maker of the square magnet woofers used by Advent and Dahlquist.
 
I'll throw this small bit of info that a poster* over on The classic speaker pages posted on replacing the foam in advent utilities. He estimated 2.1 lbs. or10.5 ft. of r13 OC. If you use R19 you can go by weight. He also stated this could be used roughly. You guys may not really need that info but maybe someone will.

Here are the specs on E'Wave's D220Ti. They don't tell us Le that I can see there, but I can estimate it from the PWT impedance curve.... :yes:

Similarly, I don't know Le of LE14A, either, but LE14H = 1.35 mH.

I used an online inductive reactance calculator and found that at 1300 Hz, .25mH was 2 Ohms. Add this to an Re of 6 Ohms and 8 Ohms is about right (@1300Hz).

I've also used Woofer Tester II on my Altec 902's, JBL 2226's, Altec 416's, and Altec Model 14 woofers.

I'm almost done with mine and the cabs were built from scratch for the LE14 woofers. Sanding down the last one right now and should have them up and running in a few days after the staining and finishing is completed.

FWIW, the woodworking is the most time consuming, but could be done more quickly had I not got caught up in cosmetics. The veneering was brutal because I used raw flitches and had to trim match and patch, but it was worth it to me. If I just would have grilled them, I could have saved days of labor. :yes:

That has a pretty low efficiency for an Ewave. I think you'd be throwing away a bunch of the dynamic capability of the tweeter by padding it down that far. That line has a pretty good midrange though. It might sound great.

Yes, of course! :yes:

I'm not much liking what it's doing just above 1 kHz there, smack in our crossover region. There's a glitch in the impedance curve there, as well, indicating that it's a resonance.

These have about the right center to center spacing, and the woofer is OK in 3.5 cu. ft. I would just like them to play flatter (mids are too peaked).

I will try the 931-12 Mantaray CD horn, too. I have them in the 10 degree down position. The Pyle horn will fall thru the hole in the baffle.:sigh:



EDIT: The other speakers are Radio Shack Optimus-5 given to me, so I have nothing to lose.

After that, the fun will come with designing and building an appropriate enclosure. I have already ordered a book on loudspeaker design. This is pretty fun! :banana:

I'm sorry if it's been brought up before, but I just started reading this thread and really like what I see. I built my first pair of speakers (Speakerlab Khorns) from the plans in '75 and have always liked High Efficiency speakers. I'm wondering if a Karlson-coupled bass unit would work in this configuration.

As an old-time "Bass Lister" I recognize a couple of the participants and perhaps there are others as well.

Not so important about flat, but it should play smoothly into the crossover region, 1.6 kHz, nominal.

As Ray suggests, you'll have to make the classic tradeoffs between efficiency, bass extension, and cabinet size. Your book should tell you about that.

Once you get the E'Wave HF built, you can easily experiment with different LFs to determine what works best for you and what you most like.

You like Advents? Find a pair of Utilities, thrashed ones, even, and build along with the Bauhausler and Paratima.

Is that gonna work? We don't know. Y'all'll be telling the rest of us here soon.

The Beta 12As have been on my radar for a future EWG project, but I haven't really given the project a whole lot of consideration yet. I have too many other drivers laying around to build stuff with.

Terry, I would worry about the effect the whizzer would have on the response even if crossed over lower. The Beta 12A seems to be a more appropriate driver for the job. Or maybe better yet, the Beta 10 with a subwoofer or three to supplement the bass.

Hi Ray,

I have the same concerns about the whizzer that both Dave and yourself have mentioned, although depending on what frequency it's crossed over it may not be a huge concern. I've had a bit of luck with whizzers in the past, using phase plugs and terminating the outer edge of the whizzer with a bit of rubber cement, but I've never tried that with an LTA and it might not work.
It seems that the horn, uh, er...waveguide and driver are pretty well sorted out, so maybe I'll ask Santa for a pair for Christmas...just to get off to a start. I need to read the whole thread, but from what I've seen so far, this looks like a lot of fun!
