Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Would the capacitor/resistor compensation network smooth that glitch out? I did not even notice that until you mentioned it.

Fellow E-wavers...

I am about to pull the trigger on the D220ti's and all of my crossover parts and I want to make sure that the 900HZ crossover is the preferred version for the LE14A, yes?

Smoothing the glitch won't do anything; it merely suggests there's a resonance issue at that frequency. It's the response peak you may have to deal with.

Thanks Zilch, my parts are on the way! One more LE14A and I will be in business. I am going to use the C36 cabinet volume you suggested, Zilch, and
use two flared 2" ports to reduce the possibility of the dreaded "chuff".
 
Well, mine are pretty much done. Dragged them downstairs and have them set up in the main rig and feeding them EL84 SEP tube power.

These sound, nice, real nice...

I finally got around to playing with the Ewaves that Zilch kindly obtained and posted out here to me. They are temporarily in 4 recycled PA boxes with the Ewave and Emilar EA175 and a 2123 in the smaller box, and a 2225 in the larger 60L one with silicon caulk extended ports. They rattle a bit at level, but with a Behringer Xover and three Yamaha pro poweramps, they sound pretty good so far. Set up consisted of 10 mins sweeping and measuring to get the levels correct.

New boxes will be coming after Xmas. Still unsure of whether to go WMTM or WMT: the latter should have more than enough output and looks better I think. The 2225 will be in a 75L ported alignment, the 2123(s) in a semi sealed or sealed sub enclosure. Same xover will be used but I'll take some time to dial it in. These will be used as sides in the main system as I have a Unity based main system coming too.

As I have been thinking up names for them, I think these will be called the Jezebels: J for JBL, E for Ewave, Z for Zilch (without who this wouldn't have happened), e for electronic xover and bel for the serious decibels that will put out.

You're one of the few members who also has Geddes waveguides for comparison. Is E'Wave in the same league by your experience of both? :dunno:

Did you see the pics of what I was sent? They were very poorly made so I sent them back and eventually got a refund. I never got to use them as they would have needed too much work.

Here are some ideas for 12" drivers:
AE Speakers TD12M
AE Speakers TD12H/X
JBL 2206
Beyma 12G
The TD12H or TD12X will provide pretty good bass extension for a 12" driver, but are less efficient through the midrange than the others. All of them are reasonably well behaved in the upper midrange / crossover region.


THAT SAID, the JBL LE14 series is going to be *very* tough to beat. It works well in a relatively small enclosure, provides nice deep bass extension (without EQ), and is pretty smooth right up to the crossover frequency. It's a 14" driver, but has a "squircle" frame, so it doesn't require much more baffle width than 12" drivers. The only problem seems to be availability.

Is the primary difference here that the -1 has the foam surround, while the -3 has the rubber surround?
 
Not sure if LE14H-3 is appropriate for Aristocrat, which is a folded corner horn.

As to the question, they do occasionally appear at Harman Parts, where you linked on the JBL Consumer website. They are well regarded on LHF for use in vented alignments, and are usually gone in a matter of just days when they do come available. JBL Consumer does not sell components, and it's not used in any Pro products; that small stock is repair parts.

Jackgiff, Duffinator, and myself all use them in E'Waves and equivalents. PM me with your location if interested; I may be able to source a couple NIB pairs of them.... :yes:
 
re:aristocrat. my bad. i wasn't paying close enough attention. i don't know if the le14 series would work there.

zilch, in #643, you reference a 2.5 way. did you use le14h "-1" woofers in that one? is more information on that speaker available? that seems to be pretty darn close to what i am thinking about. :scratch2:

i notice the "-1" variety has a much lower qms compared with the "-3", any comments on how/if this seems to matter? :scratch2:

the impedance plot on the "-3" has a dip in the 800-1000hz region. what is causing that? does it have to do with the rubber surround? the 1400 array crosses just under this dip, so i wouldn't expect it to show up in any performance there, but for a higher crossed econowave application, does it create any problems? :scratch2:

Yeah why not, it's not like I've got about 20 sets of speakers to refoam, a dozen TTs to rehab, or a couple of tube amps to rebuild or anything like that.
Plus those damn Explorer brakes are still hanging over my head.

I just can't figure out why I can't get excited about cleaning the garage so I can pull in a snow covered truck and roll about underneath it trying to replace rusted brake lines??? :D
