Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I just inherited a pair of Altec Malibu cabinets with 4 Altec 414-A 16 ohms 12" woofers and two 811B horns in them. Can I use the Selenium D220Ti and the mentioned crossovers with these 811 horns. Also do you suggest I wire the Altec 414 in parallel or just use one woofer per cabinet to avoid phase shift. I know Zilch is really against doing two woofers in same cabinet.

Or perhaps someone can suggest a better way to make use of what I have. Thanks
 
I just recieved 16 of these horns today from Pyle. This weekend and the SMAC meeting I will pass them out and hopefully in short order, there will be 8 pairs of these in the S.E. Michigan area. Cheers.

I did not use the E'Wave crossover there, and have no clue as to whether the HF compensation would work optimally for that combination.

There are ways to use dual woofers to great advantage in a single cabinet. The trick is to use one of them as a "Helper" woofer at the lowest frequencies only, as Gordon and I have discussed here several times now.

Skywave did it with 414s in his 9844Bs; it takes just one inductor to make enhanced bass response happen:

I don't know about "Best on the Net," but it's clearly knocking down barriers to exploration of alternative loudspeaker topologies, to wit:

Well, by best on the net, I mean the thread in its totality, not just the speaker project itself. There's getting to be a lot of info valuable to speaker builder/would be designers who would like to get their feet wet, but dont have the support to jump in.

In this thread, there is a great speaker to be built, of course. Also is a boatload of info regarding certain drivers and sealed vs. ported, tons of info where people have mated it to various bass boxes, lots of questions asked and asnwered concerning that and other issues.

There's the "helper woofer" info, the tower version (what happened to that?)
Then there's all the info about RTA and the inexpensive Beringher unit, as well as the active crossover info using yet another Beringher unit. There has been a lot of good threads over at LH forums, like your "Quick and dirty" as well as many others. Hell, I learned about , and obtained the JBL 4647, I though that was pretty dam good


This is a very good all around with all the info here, as well as links to many of these other fine threads. In that regard, I find it to be at least one of the best I have encountered. If there are others this good, I'm all ears/eyes!:thmbsp:

The tower versions are here, and play most sweetly.

I've still got to bolt the assemblage together, so in the meantime, Advents are stacked on top to insure the components are sealed together.... :p:
 
Got pics? I was thinking that towers would be nice to clear furniture betweet the sitting position and speakers. Cheers.

Thanks Russellc. Those look good and I bet sound good too.

I am looking forward to this weekend when I can rearrange my speakers. Right now I have the Imperials like in the first pic. The midhorn and tweet are sitting in the sub mouth and the woof is down low. I am going to flip them, like pics 2 and 3, and set the Ewave on top along with the tweet. That will bring the woof up high close to the mid and tweet, and let the sub unload onto the floor. Cheers.

Vertical nulls, revisited

I saw all the recent complaints about Geddes build quality. I empathize with his fabrication problems but really, round horns are a piece of cake to make on a lathe. As for tolerance, yes, wood tends to swell and shrink with humidity but it isn't as much as what I think we're seeing in his fabrication techniques. Seems to me that's the best way to do small production runs of round horns.

Beyond that, the design is still plaiged with the problem of anti-phase nulls at narrow vertical angles. Earl admitted that there was a null at 7.5 degrees, which means it is straight ahead of the speaker for over ten feet. To me, that's a deal breaker.

Round horns increase vertical spacing making the null angle smaller. They also put the sound where you don't want it, towards the ceiling and the floor. This is why I do not suggest round horns for a loudspeaker like this.

I just got home with a pair of L77 cabs and LE10A woofers which will be the basis for my EWG speakers. The new foams for said woofers came in the mail today. I'll see you on Saturday for those horns.
I don't know what the local need for Selenium drivers is, but maybe we need to do another group buy of those for locals.

Okay. I'll have to write up a parts order for the usual fuses, Marantz bulbs, Caig, shrink tubing, terminals & misc. bits to make a PE order worth the shipping charge.
I was wondering if there's enough need for drivers here in the Detroit area to make a larger buy (4 units) worthwhile to get the price and shipping break. I'll only need 2 of them myself.
 
Hey Ross maybe post in the smack forum for a group driver buy.

Funds are tight for me so I don't know if drivers are in my near future.:thumbsdn:
 
On another note anyone know much about the JBL 122A drivers and there suitability?

There from the L166 pretty scraped up pair I have, cabinets seem a bit on the small side.
