Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

On another note anyone know much about the JBL 122A drivers and there suitability?
I have never worked with them, but they'll likely work fine.

Run your box models; try E'Wave with the stock boxes first, and if the result shows promise, start thinking about "improvements...."

Another JBL 'will it work' question:

I have these L77 cabs and LE10A woofers. I don't have the PR10s that these cabs were supposed to have. I do have a different set of PRs. I have a pair from (I think) Polk 7's. Comparing them, I think the Polk PR has more mass, a less springy suspension and more 'throw' compared to the relatively light and stiff PR10.

I'm guessing this will not be ideal but will probably work better than nothing until I get a pair of PR10s.

I haven't re-foamed the LE10A's yet but will soon.
I know the classic answer will be "put it together, measure it in every possible way and post the results" but I can't do that. I have purposely limited my speaker measuring gear to the absolute minimum to prevent me from falling headlong into the bottomless time/effort pit that is objective acoustic testing.

I'm just looking for an opinion on whether this is worth trying.

Well... the "softer", more compliant Polk passive might actually work better. IME, the softer the suspension on a passive radiator, the better the transient response and frequency response of the system, in most cases.

Try playing around with adding and subtracting weight from the back of the Polk... you might wind up with something you like!

Regards,
Gordon.

Good point. There's a disc of some kind of material on the front that I can probably remove. Then I can add mass in the form of putty or whatever to 'tune' the PR's behavior. I assume that removing mass will lower the Q and raise the resonant frequency, which might be desirable in this case.

I bought mine from Parts Express, low 40s as I remember, fast delivery. Easy returns on problems. No fuss no muss!:thmbsp:

Russellc

I got a PE sale catalogue and the D210Ti are on sale for $31.00.
Doesn't say anything about the D220s though.

Yep, I'll need a pair unless I rig up a converter for the Altec 806As
I guess the D220Ti is the preferred of the two; at least that's what the first post indicates?
Here's a link to the PE listing

D220Ti Driver

Let's post in SMAC or get with Denny and find out who the others are and if they need drivers. I'm pretty sure Keg and Denny are set though.

Okay.

When I worked with L77s here recently, I found the bass with PR10s "delicious."

Most any PR will work, and what you have is likely worth a try. As Gordon suggests, you can vary the tuning with mass. JBL typically did that with a bolt through the center and fiber and metal washers on the back. Yes, more mass = lower frequency.

I have purposely limited my speaker measuring gear to the absolute minimum to prevent me from falling headlong into the bottomless time/effort pit that is objective acoustic testing.
Poo. You measure PR tuning just like a vented box; the minimum impedence between the two peaks is a good approximation of Fb.

Which ALSO suggests, if your PR doesn't work, just block off the PR hole with a slab of plywood and stick a port in the tweeter hole.... :thmbsp:

Yeah, a port would be easy but I figured trying an available PR was no more trouble than blocking off the PR hole.

Thanks for the support. I hope to be able to tackle the re-foaming tomorrow.

That would do, wouldn't it.
Anything in the plumbing bins at HD?? :D

BTW, here's a link to the driver thread I posted over in SMAC.
Maybe I should send it out over email too??

I thought I like to contribute as own both Selenium D200Ti and B&C DE250.

Those who has sensitive ear I would not recommend D220Ti as it seems to have a high freq. zing to it and your ear may feel fatigue after a while. I suggest the DE250 which is much smoother and you will not feel fatigue on extensive listening.

approx Cost,
D220Ti - $45
DE250 - $120

This is kind of dollars and sense but today, 8/22/2008, the D210ti is on the PE deal of the day for $25 with threaded throat, perfect for the Pyle wave guide horn from MCM; $25 D210ti PE

OK, I just talked to Parts Express and Debby told me that they honnor the $25.00 price on the D210Ti 24 business hours after the special day. So, they will sell you that driver on Monday as well. AND, they are also open tomorrow. So you have the weekend to think about these. Cheers.
