This is my first post on this forum, I can't imagine a more worthy thread to post it in:yes: Started reading this thread before Christmas, man it is a looooong read and full of some great information, convinced me to join AK so I can keep track.
I've been looking for a good entry level diy speaker project and I believe I found it here so if you speaker gurus don't mind, I'm gonna be lurking around and accumulating the necessary parts to join the ewave fun

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I am stoked about this project. It is amazing to read and see all the different variations of this project. It is rare to see one specific upgrade cover such a wide spectrum of applications with equal success:thmbsp::thmbsp:
Have the 6" and 8" square waveguides been proven to work equally as well as the 6.5"x12" and do they use the same xo. Since I am still in the design phase, I want to consider all of my options. I do like the dayton knockdown boxes as sort of a kit type design idea, add components and finish to my taste

The 6" and 8" work with the standard crossovers. The several of us who are building with them and measuring are comparing notes on different ways to optimize their performance. That shouldn't deter anyone from building with them, however; we're talking minor differences.
I'm a major proponent of the Dayton KD Trapezoid kit. I have JBL 123A-1 (the L100 woofer) installed right now, and am working on optimizing the lowpass filter for that woofer, as a lot of members have and like them and want to use them in EconoWaves. There is an apparent resurgent interest in these woofers on LHF, as well.... :yes:Since I am still in the design phase, I want to consider all of my options. That's great news. That will be my build, with the QSC and the DE250, and I'm appreciative that someone is doing the heavy lifting on the optimization. I'll be paying attention, and I'll be sure to post when mine are completed. Thanks - Pat

In order to use the rear screen I have to position the front grille in the stock orientation. If I do that there's not a lot of clearance to move the waveguide forward of the woofer. The farther forward I put the waveguide, the lower it can be and the smaller the center to center distance. I'll have to see if the compromise of having the waveguide higher and farther back is worth it to have the back screen installed. This will take some measuring to see where the forward lobs goes when the waveguide is moved. I'd like to have the back screen on but not if it compromises performance significantly. I will be using the front grilles, but they need to be disassembled and refinished and new cloth installed. A project for later...
I've been boosting 123A there since I first heard my pair. The cone is fairly unique- the curvature of the cone forming a near-flat ring around the periphery. Not only is the shape fairly unique in isolation, usually cones with significant curvature are straight, uncoated/minimally coated cones, where the 123A is a very heavy coating.

Make Magazine has been great to me. I'm writing another article for the March issue about a chip amplifier. They don't publish many audio projects outside of gadgets and DIY musical instruments. There's a colossal audio DIY realm to be explored in print. I hope to develop new projects/articles based on DIY builds discussed in AK, and collaborating with other AK-ers. AK has amazing penetration in the online community, but 100,000 mailboxes every 3 months plus news stands is a whole lot of additional exposure.

Um.. I thought we had figured out that the 15" will work better for me because of the size box I'm using Zilch? I think someone that ran the numbers for me said I would need a box about half the size of what I have if I were to go with the 12"..
Oh.. and actually, it belongs in Barter Town or in the paid classifieds..

Similost, the larger JBL waveguide and BMS 4555 is a fabulous combination. I have a pair of Altec Santana cabinets (my avatar) with LE14A woofers and the described HF combo, and they are keepers for sure. Nobody could talk me out them, period.
