Some things get better with age, but technology is not Chateau Lafitte. That's why we don't put bias belted tires on cars any more. Radials work better on just about everything. I just rehabbed a Dyna PAS preamp this evening. Out went the lossy and unreliable selenium rectifier in the heater circuit and in went quiet, durable silicon diodes.
The subhead to my Make Magazine article on Ewaving the Large Advent was "Turn good vintage speakers into great modern ones" and I stand by that.
Every product is a compromise using the best materials and methods that are cost effective at the time. It often happens that it can be improved upon later.

In the case of the DQ-10waves, I happen to really like this woofer and the DQ-10 is the best vintage cabinet for integrating it with the QSC waveguide from the standpoint of cosmetics, driver positioning and ease of build. I've passed on a number of complete pairs before finding a pair I didn't feel bad about altering. Save the nice ones for the purists if possible.

Center channel will be a future project.

You, sir, are a gentleman. Classy action there! :thmbsp: This hobby has few enough enthusiasts without the various factions fighting it out. I'm a vintage fan but only insofar as there are often great parts to work with in modern designs. Before E-Wave, I used 123A.... before me, it was Troels..... that woofer is a bit of vintage art, but I'd not kill a working pair of L100 for them, piss-poor design though it be. Let someone who wants them for vintage sake have 'em. Fortunately I got my pair(s) outside of complete working speakers.


A lightweight tweak for anyone reading this deep into the post- check for open cell laptop packing foam- a quick cut or three with a utility knife can make a lossy "collar" for E-waveguides. My own used a beveled edge to allow more depth in front of the horn without obstructing the flare. Should help smooth the roughness around 1-2k where the flare's beginning to cease pattern control. I haven't measured yet.

His work (and the highly suitable parameters for the design) is what compelled me to use the 123A for my 2 way open baffles. Being only a single 12" they're level limited but are essentially flat to 30 :D

I have refined the vertical polar protocol, expanding it to +/- 20° in 5° increments.


On axis:

Forward axis is on waveguide center, with measurements up and down from there.

Yeah, I saw that when I was looking up the gasket #... (If only they would ship what I have already ordered, I'd be busy!)

Did you see the brace behind the narrow bit between the woofer and waveguide? I like to tie in the back panel on that spot. Maybe next time I'll put a cross piece in like that, and then tie IT to the back...

Will the front grill/cover be retro fitted so that all appears normal from the outside? That should surprise a few DQ 10 fans.....

Preliminary measurements some months ago gave variable results. It certainly helps figuring them out that they be mounted. Same center distance as the QSC set up like this. It's gonna be interesting.

The AR4x with LE14A subs are keepers; they're good enough for HT mains. That's five pair, now, and another three or more to go.

This is my first post on this forum, I can't imagine a more worthy thread to post it in:yes: Started reading this thread before Christmas, man it is a looooong read and full of some great information, convinced me to join AK so I can keep track.


I've been looking for a good entry level diy speaker project and I believe I found it here so if you speaker gurus don't mind, I'm gonna be lurking around and accumulating the necessary parts to join the ewave fun:D
