Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

.5 by any other name is?

Yes, run either as MTM or with one of them in "0.5" mode.

I've searched this thread for 0.5 and .5 and it comes up empty.
Is there another term that has been used for this configuration?

The UWave using the Lambda TD12 wouldn't have that problem as it's response is a bit smoother and more extended. I played with some modeling on it, and you can't get away with a simple LC filter. 3rd order minimum to get a good phase match to the QSC.

Schumacher, how much difficulty do you think it would be to adjust it to the JBL 2235H,
also using the QSC and DE 250? This is what I intend to TRY to suss out once measuring system is up and running.

Thanks for any advice you may have on where to start would be greatly appreciated.

The .5 means one of the two mid-woofers is only being used a woofer on the bottom end. Running both as mid-woofers to meet the HF causes intereference problems.

A question for P. Schumacher or Zilch?

Concerning the 5-piece x-over for QSC/DE250. I assume values have been selected for 8 Ohm top and bottom. I have access to a pair of 2225J and may want to try those out for that particular project. Any suggestions as to how to deal with that in the crossover. I could use 16 Ohm across the terminals but I'm not sure if that would be the proper way to deal with that. It would be nice if that would be the solution however as I could then use the x-over with an 8 Ohm woofer at some point and not have to reconfigure.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

yay page 666!

I got both my cabinets assembled last night.

These things sound sweet. Need my inductors as I think I can hear some woofer breakup. Top end is smooooth. Forte bass rocks!

Whats interesting having started with the D220TI and Dayton DC250 is that I don't know that I have any more bass. Its just a bit more natural and laid back bass. The top end just seems to be smoother on the BMS 4552nd and doesn't have that titanium sparkle I'm used to. It seems a bit lacking initially, but doesn't take long to realize its actually a bit better.

yay page 666!...

Yep, that's a lot!

Woke today to the doorbell, a package from JBL!

Time to go see if the trap cabs I started a few months ago have room for these.

I suppose there are a few changes to the STD EWave XO required for 8X8's?
I'm going to start with that in any case, and listen for a while.

If you go with a larger CD driver to keep up with the Lambda's, you will probably be crossing at a little lower point.

Or even a lot lower point.... 1-2 octaves!

Granted, then it becomes not the true guide project Zilch was working on, which was a very flat response, but you will have an amazing pair of speakers.

Obviously people can pick their projects, but if the horn is constant directivity (and there are plenty of CD 2" horns), there's no reason why such a system crossover over at 400 to 800 couldn't aim at exactly the same flat response and dispersion pattern, is there? I'm just asking.

Well, I'm just asking as someone who really thinks the EWG project is terrific, but could lead to a bigger project with the same intent. I've got CD horns with JBL 2441, and would VERY much like to tag along with a project to integrate that with a pro audio 15" using RTA. It wouldn't be Econo, but it could be glorious. What a great thing if I could interest some of the bright passionate folks on here in that direction. And I want a pony too.

All things considered, my project wasn't much in the sense of econo, nor in the realm of looking at a flat response considering the crossover I used and such.. however, it sure lead me to something that sounds pretty spectacular..

To the best of my knowledge, you can't get flat to 20 kHz with constant directivity using a 2" throat diameter, and there are just a few 1.5" combinations that'll do it.

Also, at the other end, anything in the 800 Hz range or below requires a large horn or an even larger waveguide, and implicitly, below that, 3-way.

There are plenty of commercial examples of how to do it, but they're not "Econo...."

similost,

have you read the BMS thread? did you try and install the extra 8 and 4 ohm resistors (from memory) (fixed pad) to bring down the BMS drivers a bit more?

if you read the thread look for punker-x's posts. I'm not sure how much more efficient the lamda's are than the altec 15s, but I bet it'd get you closer.

do any measuring yet?

Yeah.. I read the thread.. but I've been doing a lot more listening lately, and if what I'm hearing is correct, which I'm having a really hard time believing, things are breaking in REALLY nicely... A lot smoother, the bass seems to be even richer, the highs not shrill and harsh like I was hearing, the horns not over playing the woofers... I did also do some more dial twisting, button pushing, and slider sliding in the process too..

I'm just over the top happy with them now... I really don't feel it's my ears getting used to them either. My wife has an aversion to over the top horns and gets fatigued very easily.. At first she said they were over the top too, but now she's saying just like me.. sounding pretty fantastic..

I've never believed in all that break in BS... but now I'm kinda having to wonder a little..

Oh.. and no measuring.. Don't have the stuff, don't really want to spend the money on the stuff, and really don't have the time, or the desire to learn.. but I can say my seat of the pants ass dyno is saying they are some really ball busting rock and roll speakers, that do a lot of other music VERY well and refined too... Classical on these sounds pretty freakin amazing, and I don't really care for classical all that much..

Any thoughts on the 1.4" BMS 4554 driver and 1.4" Pyle 916 CD horn? Not sure if the bolt pattern is the same but the at least the horn ($23 PE # 292-2582) is in the econo range.

8X8's breaking in...

I got these hooked up to my CV-Wave boxes. I flipped the cabs upside down and sat the 8X8 on top, it's pretty stable where it is due to the CD driver's magnet sticking to the steel pole socket...

After locating my spare STD XO, I took the jumper bars off the Bi-Amp input terminals so I could tie the HF inputs of the external XO to the LF inputs of the internal one. Sort of half in, half out of the box, so to speak.

The new Selenium drivers sound a lot rougher than the ones I've been using for a few weeks, so I'll have to run them in for a while before forming any opinions on this waveguide.

What's obvious at first listen is the directivity, it's pretty uniform over the angles printed on the front of the flange. Vertical is "if you can see the gold front of the Selenium, you can hear the top end", while horizontal goes much further than just the visible, due to the throat shape, which is reminiscent of 2344. sort of.

HF comp has been different with each combo I've built, so measure and tweak.

I have a pair of AR4x with them installed, and DC200s at the ready to complete them.

[I'll apply PCD to the task this time.... :thmbsp: ]

I have a set of LE10A's that are looking for some work to do. Next month... Gotta run, 10000 is coming right up!

10K? Or did someone already do it?

Here's 9999.

If the thread self-destructs, we'll have to start all over....

Funny That just happened to me at Wolfgang's Vault, I went over 500 songs in my basket (Freebies as a VIP member) and it won't download ANY!

/ EDIT> It Still Works! And to prove it, here's another view of the 8X8.

OK, Who's going to be the 10,000th REPLY? (Stuck @ 9999 on the front page...

And The Winner Is! RussellC!:thmbsp:
