Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Oh well. Another eWave project gone by the waist side. I have a pair of Ohm C2 10" woofs I was thinking about putting in a pair of cabs I have laying about and doing another eWave project, but a friend told me last night that he has a pair of Ohm C2 speakers that need woofers. So I traded him the Ohm woofers for a pair of Yamaha stage monitors with 15" woofs and horns the size of Altec 511 and compression drivers as big or bigger than the Altec 288C.

I have a very good friend who lives in northern Michigan that has been down on his luck for a couple years now and wants to build up some speakers (he don't have anything at the moment) so we will put the guts of the Yammies into very well built empty cabs he has now.

I guess there will always be more oppertunity to do the eWave again when the time is right.

review: very raw impressions, but...they do bass like mofo's-- throw some watts into 'em, like i am right now with a Phase Linear 400 and they get very BIG. i had been using some freshly rehabbed (thank ya dc270!) AR 2ax's, and those sounded terrific. i saw an article in brit mag HiFi News by Ken Kessler in which he referred to the 2ax as one of the best vintage speakers ever, on par with LS3/5a's, and some others i can't recall, but i got the gist of what he meant listening to those. anyone with an unrehabbed pair of 2ax's around should get with the program...

but these Ewaves are a different animal. bass and soundstage is massive and deep, the horns put the upper wavelengths into the room in a way i'm still getting used to- i'm gonna hafta mess w/ the trim pots some .... i have to say that Paul Stewart's genius baffle cuts are a big part of the final results...

Those look fantastic! It really is funny to me how those outside of the Ewave circle just don't get it, especially once you listen to them in their many configurations. Then you compare them to other speakers; nice, expensive speakers that cost 1 or 2k or more. At that point it is really difficult to rationalize how great they really sound considering their price point. I still marvel at the speaker building genius we have right here with the guys on this forum that paved the way for us. It did take a village...
 
thanx, mark. my only wish is that i hadn't stained the edge of one of the cones w/ the brake fluid....i also plan to mod the original grilles and re-install them...

Deal with it at the time you ultimately refoam them.

Suggestion: contact one or more of your local JBL factory service centers:

Ask them to save you a damaged white aquaplas cone the next time they replace one. Stain areas of it with brake fluid, and then figure out how to get it off.

OR use it to test sample touch-up paints for a color match, and whether they'll stick to the stained area.

Some of them may already have a custom mix and they'll sell you enough to do it yourself. They deal with stained aquaplas cones routinely.... :yes:

RS28F in a waveguide

I know a while back some folks were contemplating dropping the RS28F into a waveguide . . .

Anyone know if any experiments have been run on its suitability as an econowave candidate yet?

I have the 10" round QSC 122i waveguides and the drivers, now; just need to get to the shop and part them down to some throat diameter, which it'd be good if I figured out what that should be first. ;)

I'm going to put them in Delite 10 first with the stock Celestion compression drivers for another round of PCD mettling so we have that as a baseline for performance comparison.

Of note: the dearth of waveguides at InDIYana and NorCal DIY this weekend.... :dunno:

I've successfully removed the major portion of brake fluid stains from LE14s by using denatured alcohol solvent (no water content). My process is to place an absorbent wad of rag or paper towel on the backside of the stained area in direct contact with the cone. Next, lightly saturate a small wad of rag or Q tip with alcohol, shake out excess and carefully dab the stained area from the front side of the cone. The physical size of the wad should be somewhat smaller than the small dimension of the stain so you can maintain some control over migration of the alcohol outside of the stained area(s). DO NOT rub or you'll abrade the aquaplas away and the black cone will show thru. You can check your progress by removing the backing rag and letting the alcohol evaporate over a about a 1/2 hr time period or you can hasten the drying time with a hair dryer on low heat. The process will have to be repeated in most cases. The idea here is to cause the alcohol to "flow" thru the stain, dissolving the brake fluid and carrying it with it thru the cone and into the disposable backing absorber.

Start slow and be cautious till you get the hang of it. The process is time consuming but if you're careful you'll be able to remove nearly all of the stain with out harming the thickness, texture or basic appearance of the aquaplas. All of this assumes you used the typical glycol-ether type of brake fluid and not a silicone based material.

I played Deluxe w/o subs.

Deluxe had better mids, Standard had bigger bass.

I couldn't believe it, but both imaged nicely at the back of that large room.

Mostly, I was happy they played.

Gentle application of alcohol and a cotton ball may get it off. Do the whole cone, not just the stained part. May take more than one application. Hydrogen peroxide is also good for removing stains from Aquaplas. It's actually pretty tough stuff. More like a mineral plaster than paint. If you need a cosmetic touch-up for a chip, most of these early cones have aged to a color very close to Liquitex 434 Unbleached Titanium acrylic. It can be whitened if need be.

Is there any further review of the shootout? I didn't see anything at the techtalk link.

How was the imaging at the listening position vs. the back of the room? I've noticed my econowave with 2226H sound better at the back of my 28' room than they do at the 12' listening position.

There'll be some pics, and maybe a comment by the director, but other than that, only spontaneous observations by attendees in individual posts. Thus far, nobody has said much other than suggestions as to how the meeting might be improved next time.

eWave was "on" for about 10 minutes total, 4 for Standard and 4 for Deluxe with the first 2/3 of the compulsory demo cuts only each, plus about 2 minutes of my optional selection, John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom on Deluxe. It was all I could do to walk to the rear of the audience for a brief listen to each.

It's very difficult to set up similar listening conditions -- a largish listening space with audience absorptive characteristics, very different from typical home listening rooms, and thus, in that sense, artificial. Only the audience knows how they sounded, and it's like I wasn't part of that experience for my own projects, being the presenter/entertainer. Again, I was mostly pleased that they played and sounded much as I had expected, i.e., good to me, FWTW.... :music:

I just had a pair of the 8X8 shipped to Denver for $28.00. When you call JBL they will give you a total including shipping.

Love the look, and brings my old L88+ to mind. Has anyone come up with a 123A-QSC-DE250 configuration yet? I've got the fixin's and the trap cabs, and I'd prefer a sealed-box 123A to spending the dough on another pair of woofs. TIA - Pat
