NOW, how many dB increased SPL capacity will the doubled-woofer, doubled-cabsize, parallel-wired variant enjoy in the subject low-frequency region?

I would think that the maximum power to each woofer is still the same as one by itself, so the only advantage would be the double cone area, which adds 3 dB. 6 if you use 4 woofers... (Would that be 2.25 way? 3 doing lows, one mids?)

I have a feeling the answer is in a link a few posts back. (Scurrying off to read said link...)

Correctomundo. So long as we're excursion limited and not amplifier limited, 3dB. If the amp is the limiting factor then we need to know amp power and other specifics to make the call.
 
Zilch, I had read a little on the E'Wave project earlier last year but then managed to lose track of it as life issues kept me away from AK. I just recently came back to see what was cooking and I'm extremely impressed with how successful this whole project has become; mind boggled even. You really spear headed something quite amazing, and just because you wanted to. And of course, having a great group of guys via AK collaborating on it made it possible as well. :ntwrthy:

I was looking over the member projects... 91! I wish there was a quick reference summary sheet on what cabinets people used. :sigh: Anyway, interesting to read through them and see the variety of choices made. I might have missed this but... is there a general rule on the minimum/maximum cabinet volume involved? Or does the E'Wave conversion work for virtually any two-way speaker? (Sorry if my question is a bit naive)

Those upgrading vintage systems are basically using the original cabs and woofers. Where T/S parameters for the drivers are known, some are designing their own cabs based upon box models and the experience of others, or retrofitting into existing empty cabs. There have certainly been some wonderful projects completed with this concept! :thmbsp:
 
I'm the next E-Waver!

:banana: I ordered the stuff to E-Wave my old Advents. They have already been woofer-upgraded to the Peerless 830411, 8" 8ohm, that was recommended by Madisound at the time (~8yrs ago). Hopefully I ordered the right combination of parts: Selenium D220Ti, Pyle PH612 waveguide, and all the crossover parts listed in EconoWave Summary at

for the <95 dB 8ohm woofer.

To bi-amp these, do I just wire the HF and LF halves of the xover to separate input posts? I did order the PE bi-amp binding posts.
 
Welcome to AK Craig. Glad to see you are jumping right in there. I was very impressed with my eWaves and I just, last weekend at the fest, talked to the guy that bought them. I think he's had them for two years or so now and still loves them. I bi-amped mine. I just wired the crossovers with the hi and los with their own grounds. When Mike bought mine he just used a jumper between the two post, installed an L-pad and used one amp.

Do you still have that Stephens Tru-Sonic cab? I remember someone talked about trying/buying pair of speakers from you at your house, and of all the speakers he heard of yours while he was there, he said that he was most-impressed by the single Stephens cab. You've gotta' love those old alnico-magnet drivers - They're so-smooth and warm-sounding. My perfect speaker would have that perfect combination of alnico-warmth/smoothness and ceramic-punch/power.
 
Please advise if anyone has the parameters for the QSC HPR152 HF Horn. I would like to know the lowest frequency that it will produce accurately with a driver (such as the JBL or GPA-Altec) that covers the 500 hz to 18000 hz range. The QSC HPR152I is crossed at 2000 hz, but if possible I would like to go lower to remove the crossover from the critical music range, say in the 1000 hz to ??? hz range. The system to be a 3 way horn system with the bass horn (dual 15 inch) from 40 hz to 600 hz, the mid range( JBL 2445J) from 600 hz to 1000+??? hz range and the tweeter from ???.

QSC does not publish any specs, so it's all derivative of empirical determinations. See Augerpro's measurements in his DriverVault and my own posted during the development of Deluxe. Also, it's best to make your own using a variable frequency active crossover with it mated to any specific driver under consideration and listening to it.

Basically, it's a "small" waveguide with limited lower frequency capabilities, a significant proportion of its dimensions being dedicated to mouth roundover. 800Hz, probably not. 1200 Hz, maybe, but not so good as 1.5 or 2 kHz. Also, the "critical musical range" is ambiguous, and could be anywhere from 200 Hz to 8 kHz, depending upon who's defining it....

Unfortunately, my eyes tend to glaze over when looking at mathematical formulas beyond basic algebra. ;) I'm probably not going to know the Thiele/Small parameters of the drivers, so I guess the best bet would be to do an OAC (observe and copy)... see what cabinets have been used successfully and follow along. Although I did see a set of old JBL 2800's which are two-way and have rather spacious cabinet fronts for mounting that Selenium tweeter.

I never had a Tru-sonic cab. I wonder if it was at one of the SMAC meets. What ever they were, I'm glad he liked them. Cheers.
 
Ditton 15 E-wave

Any input/opinion on E-waving Celestion Ditton 15? Been offered a pair with an intermittent tweeter.
 
Was looking in on some construction going on in a friend of mine's bar he's preparing to open. In one room, I looked up and saw some JBL speakers hanging from the ceiling. Not that large, I think they were JX-100 or JRX-100,
something like that. Two ways, maybe a 12 inch woofer, and sure enough, there was the original E-wave guide! Different compression driver and crossover, but was kind of like bumping into an old friend!

I was going to go with 2x4" ports on the front but those holes are going to be pretty darn huge.

I am not sure how I ended up on 4" ports but that is what I have now. The port resonance is at 542 Hz. I am thinking that I should put the ports on each side now so the front isn't all cluttered up with holes.

Any problem with my port resonance? Any problem with side firing ports? Hopefully not as they are already purchased, holes cut, and going in.

Side-firing works, but like rear mounting, limits versatility in placement, whereas the front is always going to be exposed to the listener(s). Thus, I favor front mounting, unless there's simply not enough baffle space to permit it.
