A Wiredguy insight: one slit and it flexes enough to spiral in. The ring is 1/2" MDF, just thick enough to cover standard #10 T-nuts.

The trick will allow recessing just about any standard 10" woofer in large Advent cabinets. In this instance, we're going after high-efficiency HT mains with 97.3 dB woofers.... :yes:

Has Anyone Compared These Waveguides?

I picked up some parts from a damaged Altec Model Nineteen a while back. Unfortunately, the only working ones were the Altec 811b horns, the crossovers and one of the compression drivers. After reading some positive comments here and elsewhere, I ordered a pair of Selenium 220ti drivers and some adaptors which will allow me to use them with the 811b horns.

I've been reading bits of the Econowave threads so I'm also interested in trying some waveguides with these drivers. In the Econowave threads I've seen both the JBL #338800-001 mentioned and the Pyle PH612. I've also seen some threads somewhere which mentioned the Dayton H12RW 12" and the Dayton H10RW 10" Round Waveguides from Parts Express.

Has anyone compared these four waveguides - especially with the Selenium 220ti drivers? I'd like to be able to use these with as low a crossover point as possible - and still get good sound, of course. Do any of these waveguides have any major advantages over the others in such a setup?

Also very interested in the Dayton H12RW 12", though I'm looking into the BMS 4524 or B&C DE10 as HF component.

Any opinions or advice on using OB/Dipole on the bass section of the econowave?
I found a couple of (seemingly) nice drivers for that purpose on this German site.

Scroll down to view their offerings.. To me it's about the R1524, the 12"es might be of interest too in regards to this project.

The second thing which i'm still not sure of (next to 'boxed' or 'open') is to go two or three way.. Please convince me ;)

Zilch, the EconoWave Delite 10e looks very interesting. It's a challenge but I'm still reading just about every new post in this thread.

Thanks to AK member Bhamm's help I've finally started the upgrades to my speakers. Just curious why most aren't using flared ports. Is it mainly the cost? I just ordered four of these and according to the PSP website the ports need to be longer in overall length. Any thoughts on flared ports?
 
Flared ports do need to be longer than those that aren't flared. The amount they need to be longer depends to some degree on the radius of the flair. Size and cost are typically the only thing that would prevent someone from going with a flared port. They do help reduce port chuffing if you are experiencing that issue and smooth transitions are almost always better than abrupt transitions when it comes to diffraction issues.
 
I've seen some measurements on the dayton round waveguides and they look promising although maybe not quite as good as some other options. There are some that feel the center to center spacing and the resulting narrow vertical window caused by the center to center spacing makes them unsuitable. I have an unfinished project converting Altec 886As from a passive radiator system to ported and using the dayton waveguide in the location where the PR was located. It's a drop in replacement. If I ever finish it, I'll try to post some measurements.

Thanks Dave. I can see where the size of the flare can be a limiting factor but in my application I have the room so I'm going to give it a go. I read up on flared ports and I can't think of any downside for me. If nothing else they will give my speakers a more professional/finished look and hopefully I'll be able to hear the difference.
 
By all means, if you can integrate them into your design, use them. The only difference you'll likely hear is at high volumes, if you had chuffing issues before, you may not anymore. Other than that, I wouldn't expect any real changes.
 
Since you have half or more of the parts, why don't you reconstitute a Model 19?

Because, if you go EWave, you'll additionally need a different crossover and waveguide. Just slapping Selenia on 811Bs is not going to sound good. I tried that.

Or you can sell the Altec parts and fund your EWave.

The debate between Parham and Geddes with respect to rectangular versus round waveguides is well documented here and in other forums. A primary issue is the allowable center-to-center distance between the woofer and waveguide; the greater that is, the narrower the forward vertical lobe, and the more precisely it must be "aimed." Search this thread for posts by Wayne Parham using the word "axisymmetric" for more info.

Another major issue is the height of the vertical pattern: round waveguides are typically axisymmetric, implicity, as high in their vertical pattern as they are wide in the horizontal, illuminating the early floor and ceiling reflections, which must then be mitigated.

In my recent work, you can observe the results of using waveguides having a vertical dimension of 10", the latest being the 75° QSC round. Generally speaking, these are operating near what I would consider the practical limit with respect to location of the vertical nulls, though 12" would likely do as well if that permitted a lower crossover frequency.
