Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Sounds like the Peerless woofer may have a roll-off of its own, in the crossover region.

With the original Advent crossover (first order), there may not have been enough total phase shift to cause cancellation between the new woofer and the tweeter. With the E-wave crossover, being second order, there's an additional 45 degrees of phase shift... which might be enough to cause a cancellation.

You have two choices- either go back to a first order lowpass (single coil, with or without a zobel) and tune it to work with the Ewave highpass, or tune the Ewave lowpass to work with your woofer. Without measurements on the Peerless woofer, it's hard to say which will work better. A frequency response plot of JUST the woofer in the enclosure, with NO crossover (woofer connected directly to source) would help a lot in diagnosing your problem further...

Yes, tried by another in this thread, and updated to Selenium shortly thereafter.... :dunno:

Yes, the Pyle PDS221 I tried was way quieter than the Selenium, the crossover circuitry that flattens out the comp.driver response attenuated the output to a not useful level... my "cheapowave" build quickly got graduated to Selenium based econowave goodness, and still sounds great.

My gut feeling was that the problem lies in the woofer part of the e-wave crossover, compared to the Advent crossover. The Advent uses only a single small (unmarked) coil on the woofer. At the low end, both spkrs measured identical except between 112Hz and 806Hz, where the stock Advent was about 2dB lower. This is the opposite of what I expected based on sound.
The lowpass inductor in large Advent (1.6mH) and eWave (1.5mH) are essentially interchangeable.

I am building some Advent E-Waves and have the adjustable crossovers I asked Zilch about the components I may be able to use, it has to large chokes on the board which one could I use.Could not attach a photo to the PM reply so I have included some in this post.Zilch thanks for the boards and all the help also.:yes:

I also see that the larger of the two inductors in the 5002 crossover is 0.6mH, and may be used for the smaller one in eWave.... :thmbsp:

I just ordered my parts...

I've been waffling over doing this for awhile, thinking of upgrading my NLA speakers. Well, today I picked up a pair of OLAs that were missing the tweeters, so now I have an excuse to do this.

Looks like it will take about a month for that Pyle Pro horn to arrive, though...sigh.

[It's a new Dayton product, I believe, due in next week, apparently.... :yes: ]

So is anything known about this part? Is it supposed to be equivalent to the JBL and Pyle PH612 WG? I've had the PH612 on order for a month and they're quoting shipping for 6/25. maybe I should cancel and order the Daytons.

EDIT...

Size is the same. Looks like the same photo with teh contrast adjusted. The only spec that differs is the Dayton says 50 degree vertical instead of the Pyle's 40 degree but I doubt there's actually a difference. maybe Pyle is OEM-ing the PH612 for Dayton now.

I started the refurb portion of the job on the Advent Maestro cabinets last night. Starting with the refoam of the woofers, which went pretty smoothly.

But the cabinets, wow. The entire front baffle had been covered at manufacture with a thick layer of adhesive-backed foam that doubled as diffraction mitigation and gasket for the drivers. And it had all rotted to the consistency of damp cotton candy. What a mess. Does anyone know what would be a good solvent for removing this crud? I went over it with a putty knife in one hand and a shopvac in the other, but the baffle is still pretty messed-up looking.

I also hadn't anticipated that the midrange driver lived in its own cavity made up of a substantial glued-in-place cardboard tube. I suspect I'm going to be taking a sawsall to that area of the baffle to get it out, and covering it with a new outer baffle.

I talked with Karl at Parts Express about a week ago about this. It is their version of the Pyle guide, I didn't ask if it was from the same factory though. He said it was being introduced basically because of the eWave's popularity, of which they are very aware. I suggested that they could offer a full kit with this, the Selenium, and their trap cabinet.

I should have a pair of these next week, if they come in on schedule.

In scanning through this incredibly long thread, I've noticed several times where someone proposed or planned to do an MTM configuration using the eWave guide and driver for the T. Has anyone actually done this?

I saw where Zilch isn't fond of MTMs, though not sure why.
What I'm thinking of is to use 6 or 4 smaller woofers (4", 5", 6" or 8" maybe), with a horizontal row of 3 or 2 both above and below the waveguide. Would keep the driver-driver center-center distance down vertically while providing an overall combined woofer height closer to what might work for matching both horizontal and vertical directivity. And the smaller drivers would have a better chance of reaching into the midranges. I'm thinking of something like the Peerless vline BC14WG79 drivers like PE is blowing out for $12 each....

Any comments on this plan or am I missing a fatal flaw?
 
It's shaping up to be Audio Salon Day here. Horn crazies Kegger and Wojciek/Limono are on the way loaded with boxes of tubes and transformers. And worse. We're banging on the prototype tube amp for my next magazine article, trying to squeeze more watts out of 1930's technology.

If I had to bet I'd say these QSC WGs will go home with Keg to use with some vintage drivers.

I may call PE up and cancel my order for the Pyle PH612s. If the Daytons are supposed to be equivalent I'd like to see/test them.
