Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I think the QSC's would fit, but another set of DE250's don't fit the budget real well right now. And I have my heart set on using the 123A-1's and the Advent's are too small to do those justice. I may do another set of Seleniums with the 612 waveguides in there some day, maybe one of my kids will want some ewaves.

Besides, I have the itch to mess with some veneer now. If I don't get too overwhelmed doing the trap cabs in their mahogany, I'll be in the market for some Rosewood veneer to try on the proposed corner-firing boxes--

Is there any reason to not run the QSC/DE250 combo with the standard eWave crossover while I work on the design/build of the new ones?
 
Before committing to building the Deluxes, I'd like to hear what they sound like first to get a sense of how they compare to my current speakers. Are there any Ewave owners in the Los Angeles area who would be kind enough to allow me to audition their speakers?

They are very close. I'll listen more closely once I check it out on the eWave highpass filter. It's gonna take building an otherwise identical system with them and A/B-ing to answer this. :dunno:

The biggerness of the QSC waveguide is largely derivative of its built-in mouth roundover; the "action" portion is actually comparable in size to the standard eWaveguide. Augerpro's polar response measurements strongly suggest this equivalency.

Since neither the Selenium nor the DE250 are spec'd for operation below 1.5 kHz, we don't go there; both waveguides are losing pattern control in this region....
 
Zilch- What would be lowest point you could cross the JBL waveguide with a 2420 on it? Would the pattern control loss be lower because this driver goes lower, or is it determined by the design of the waveguide itself?
 
It's pattern control and the attendant compromises. I've shown that they'll play down to 1 kHz and below with appropriate drivers, but never used them in a design below 1.2 kHz that I recall.... :dunno:
 
I was just wondering if a lower crossover point using a 2420 on the waveguide would blend in better with a 2235.

Going lower is a challenge that takes a lot more crossover effort to achieve. It also requires some effort in making sure that you get clean response- not just flat but well-behaved. You can improve these with better termination, a la the foam solution for the PT guide I posted earlier in the thread, or you can work to create a transitional profile. You don't necessarily need to do all the edges, you can leave a "rougher" termination on the edge closest to the woofer to retain CTC spacing.
