Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

This has probably been thought of already and will be covered through the Zilchlabs site that is being proposed, but I am wondering what will happen with the Zilch boards, both for this project as well as the Indignia project? It doesnt seem right for them to become unavailable. Hopefully the project will live on as well as the availablity of these boards. Its easy enough to hardwire, but many wont take on the project without one, and others want them just to give a clean professional look.

It seems only fitting that these two project's boards, embossed "Zilchlabs" would only be fitting. Anyone know? Wiredbecker? Jackgiff, anyone?

I recently (last week) furnished a set of Gerber files for ZilchLab to purchase some more Indignia PC boards. When Evan took over sales of the EconoWave boards, I changed the artwork to read ZilchLab instead of my name. Evan's legacy will live on through ZilchLab.com. And I am sure than Chris will have new PCB's to sell as well. In fact, the layout is on my schedule. Just some final parts sizing details to work out.

Chris is pretty much emotionally drained after losing such a good friend. And he was right at Evans side during his last few months. He just needs some time to get it all going.

Was thinking today that a Charge-Coupled version of the board would make it easier to do that upgrade. (Just got through stacking caps vertically and tying them together on my homemade XO's.) Size would be bigger of course, would the cost go up a lot?

Does anyone have a recommendation on a high quality 8" woofer for an Ewave?

I've built a few ewaves thus far, the most recent being a pair of NLA's. I'd like to put something together that gets the acoustic centers as close together as possible, a little higher up and with improved efficiency(over the NLA anyway).

I'm thinking a 90db (or so) 8" ewave with the 8 or 6" waveguide might be the ticket. I'd like something that has reasonably good bass without a sub(I don't expect 2235 bass!:D)

Any suggestions?

not quite 8", more like 9", but I remember Zilch having a very soft spot for the Smaller Advent woofer, to the point where he joked about buying every one that came up on fleabay.....my stock smaller advents dig very, very low in a relatively compact package.....I thought somewhere he had a plan for an Ewave based off of some SA's...

another used 8" driver to check out would be an 8" AR woofer. my AR18's have pretty satisfying bass for such a small package, have a nice natural upper roll off ~ 2khz (stock crossover is a 6uf cap)....I've seen some NOS ones from the TSW series for cheap on fleabay, too....IIRC the free air resonance on these are rediculously low for an 8" woof, something like 25hz. I KNOW Zilch did a lot of development of mini Ewaves based off the AR4x...

anecdotally, I have some home build speakers I did in college 15 years ago, and the woofer was a 6 1/2" buyout from parts express. they are AR woofers, and the part number crosses to the M4 (IIRC) holographic series, which used a ~3000-3500hz crossover. doing the calcs based on the published T/S params at parts express, in the cabinets I built (ported, size is about the same footprint as my smaller advents, but 4-5" shorter) the speakers should have a -3db cutoff in the 35-40 hz range, and A/B'ing them with my smaller advents, I don't doubt it, they go almost as low as the advents. finding the 8" version (I think it was the M2?) probably would get you down in the low 30's...

New, I'd look at the EPI replacement woofers offered by humanspeakers...EPI's are known for their good bass response, and smooth roll off, as the EPI 100's use basically the same crossover as my AR18's--woofer runs full range, tweet has a single cap for a high pass....

I would think it would go up by about $20-$30 per pair.

Price for the board only, is what I was asking.

It would be easy to load the board non-Charge-Coupled with a few extra jumpers, so cost would be determined by the builder. Like today, build on wood, buy the boards, your choice, as is choice of caps/coils/resistors.

Just having the option for future upgrade would be great for some.

Will Zilchlab XO boards continue to be available? I'd like some info on that please. Thanks!

Zilch's passing should make us "enjoy the music" all the more while we can.

Cost will depend on how many PC boards are ordered. With such low demand for eCConoWave crossovers, the price will probably be at least two times more than EconoWave.

The layout is done, size is 4" by 6". I will talk to Chris to see if ZilchLab would be interested in offering this option.

Edit; Chris says that Zilchlab would like to offer the eCConoWave crossover boards, but his plate is full at the present time. We need to give him time to get everything settled.

Sorry, My Bad.

That would be nice on the pre-made boards for sure!

May as well add bypass too!:smoke:

How's this? Too spoofy?
I like it. But no s on the end of ZilchLab. It has a JBL feel which of course were Zilch's favorites. :thmbsp: What do the rest of you think?

Well I would certainly finish it up sometime if desired - purely a 20-min mock up there. The idea was a JBL feel with a JBL symbol 'i' and a lambda suggested by the 'W' (you know, wavelength... :nerd:)

+1 I think it looks great. :thmbsp: Maybe I need to recalibrate my monitor but the orange in your mockup looks a bit lighter than JBL orange.

So, if you would like me to do so I can get a quote in just a few days. Just send me the gerber files.
I was just picking up some boards today.

I like the inverted older JBL logo as the i in ZilchLab. The orange does need a touch more red in it but it's not a big deal to me.

There are nine members with "honorary" builds. We can put a H in front of the number since they were not included in the eWave numbers. While not numbered they are listed in order of their build date. Or do something more custom, I call mine ZD 007's. SBliss and Bhamm will need to be added to the list. Bhamm's are complete. Any others that need to be added?

dump truck are you offering to build them or just offering up a design? If you have a way to make them please give us the details including costs. :thmbsp:

Yeah some of the early adopters ended up with classy BMS low diving compression drivers in their waveguides. Zilch was hot off his jaw dropping C36 Viscount clone franken-speaker project...seeds planted in rich soil. Celebrating Evan's kindness and memory! :D

When you guys get this all worked out, Id be happy to buy a set of those badges. Ill keep a eye on the thread for its progress. Looks great!!!.

Yep.. I was one of the BMS driver people. Only I'm not running mine down as low as they can go.. I used the Z19, (also one of the first to do that) and I believe those are crossed around 1200hz if Im not mistaken?
