Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Would be a nice touch to add these logos to speakers when they are finished. Maybe something AK or Zilchlab could sell at a modest price? Even create some serial numbers for them, perhaps?

Apologies if this has already been discussed prior. I have plans to make some E-waves at some point myself, but have not been able to keep up with this thread.

I had discussed this with Zilch but we called mine JBL ZD 007's for Zilch Duffinator and they were designed and built in 2007. Mine have all JBL components. If someone has a connection to have them made let me know.

I deal with a guy who runs a small CNC shop out of his house. He gives me very good prices and does nice work.

Well, my new compression drivers arrived today - Celestion CDX1-1745s, as the great Zilch himself helped me choose not too long before he left us, helpful as ever.

Beyma 8BR40s...suggested by a Parts Express board member. Things get a bit nasty around 1-1.5khz but apparently it's easy enough to EQ out, and the very low Fs makes it a good choice. It's going in a 45l sealed box, calculated F3 at 50hz.

I was playing around with the Celestion 1425 but it wouldn't go low enough without getting rough, so I sold them to someone with a QSC HPR122i with blown ones...the parts went full circle!

Oh, and I'm using the HPR122i circular 10" waveguide, biamped with a DBX Driverack on CD EQ and xover duty. I'm basing the EQ on curves Zilch was using for the 1425 on 122i, but the 1745 is a bit smoother so I'll have to play around. Any tips would be much appreciated.

Finally got all the parts together for the build. :yes: Thank you Zilch for the help you gave me, despite the big mass of water inbetween us.

I'm looking forward to this weekend, I'm going to hear the pair that Rygen built. He really praised Zilch for all the help he gave him.

Thanks! I'm looking at fellow forum members' Econowaves, and there's some very nice work there, along with plenty of numbers to back it all up with. All in all, a great project. What config are you using, Simi?

Should have mine up and running by next week when the DBX gets back from the shop. It's replacing a Berry DCX, whose screen went haywire.

I don't want to derail the thread, but I'd just like to mention that through his style of writing and humour, I always got the impression he wasn't a hair older than 45. Recently found out his age and it quite honestly surprised me in the best way possible.

Look nice! Did you add 50 ohms across the woofer terminals like JBL did with the 2214H? That really tightened up the bass on my DeluxeWaves that have the 2214H in them. (Some have said they found it better without, so YMMV.)

I've recently seen the light at the end of the tunnel on another of Zilch's designs, the 4430 crossover he posted on LH.:tresbon: Actually the crossover was built a few years back, the boxes have just now started to look finished enough to move past the-horn-on-top-of-the woofer-box approach. Also I decided to add a 10" mid, but in a separate box with the horn so I can turn it over and have two way again. That added more time too.
 
I love how this has turned from a mere online speaker-project into a downright custom-speaker-design collective with ideas continuously-flying back and forth across the globe. It's quite an accomplishment. And think of all the "class-projects" that will be listened to, enjoyed, and admired for many years to come. Zilch created his own tribute to himself (Smart-thinking on his part, I must say :D).

I built the crossover before that version was developed - so it crosses at 1200 without the 50ohm addition. I didn't learn about that trick until later and I just didn't want to delay any more. I will go back eventually.

After hearing these, I am also looking at using the 4430 design in my next project with the 2235 and see if I can mate it up with some big Altec drivers I have (288 or 299) crossed at 500.

Again, I wouldn't even be thinking about this without Zilch's teaching and leadership - he just made very complicated things seem doable.
 
This has probably been thought of already and will be covered through the Zilchlabs site that is being proposed, but I am wondering what will happen with the Zilch boards, both for this project as well as the Indignia project? It doesnt seem right for them to become unavailable. Hopefully the project will live on as well as the availablity of these boards. Its easy enough to hardwire, but many wont take on the project without one, and others want them just to give a clean professional look.

It seems only fitting that these two project's boards, embossed "Zilchlabs" would only be fitting. Anyone know? Wiredbecker? Jackgiff, anyone?

Ditto. For years I have attempted to somehow catagorize and divide this into some sort of table of contents where one could find stuff in this gigantic thread. I guess I owe him that much at the very least. If this is of any value and could be incorporated into the thread I'll give it my best shot. It would not happen over night!

It has gotten so large in may well be an impossible task, but there are tons of valuable tidbits that are just lost in here.....any ideas? I sure dont want to do this and have it not be used...I have been fortunate enough to have been in on this thread since the beginning, ( E'wave #4) and have some idea of where most of the info is, or did at one time.

My thoughts now are to divide it up into catagories, and listing post numbers to all those valuable tidbits. The thread has meandered so much that some parts just defy organization that works for other parts. I've thought about this a long time
and the only reason it hasnt happened yet is (besides the mountain of projects underway) the fact it is so difficult to organize. The main info is tabbed on page one, but there are just so many good exchanges its a shame to get it lost in one of the best parts of the thread, its immense size! Ideas anyone, or should it just be what it is?

I am in the industry and have a very good friend who may help as well.

Wiredbecker I could probably host a database and maybe the site for a bit while you get it made, I just do not have the bandwith to host a zilch popular site!:D

But it could be here and then when done it could be moved. This would be free of course!:thmbsp:

Excellent! Seems his site may be an ideal place for this. Plus, it could link with several of his other great threads, like "Babies" "Quick and dirty" ( on LHF) and of course, "Flex your PCD meddle" ( On the PE tech talk forum) to get the full Zilch treatment for the lucky builder that finds this site in the future.:yes:
