Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Well Folks,
Here is my first set of completed(mostly) E-waves.


They are Barzilay cabinets with a CTS woofer from some old cornwalls - reconed by GordonW. I call them magic woofers by GordonW.
It has the standard high efficency crossover, jbl horns, and the selenium d220ti compession drivers.

I still need to finish up the grills, which will have the cloth from Crites to match the klipsch fabric, and the stands which are period correct solid walnut to mach the speaekrs.
I think they look great nad sound great too.

I just wish Zilch was still here so I could thank him again for this.

BTW - the finish on these is spar urethane. I thinned it to a consistency of one part urethane to three parts mineral spirits and applied 7 or 8 coats. They look cool..........
 
The stands I have will lift them about 4-5 inches off the floor. The epoxy is dry now and they just need to be steel wooled and urethaned.
I'll post one more set of pics when I get the stands and the grills done - prolly next week.

Very nice Mark. Those look great! I love the look of the cTS woofers as well.
 
I received my parts for my Econowave "deluxe" crossover:

Before I start soldering, can someone take a look at this pic and verify that I'm reading the instructions correctly? I get the caps, L2, L-pad, etc. but I'm mostly concerned about the tweeter crossover.

When I connect the one leg of L1 between the L-pads and the resistors, is the leg stiff enough to bend between those components (and will it stay?) or should I hot-glue that leg down to make sure it never touches either the L-pad or the resistors? I'd hate for something to short/get destroyed down the road.
 
Jumper all three.

I've done a few of these now. If you want you can mail them to me for assembly, no charge, just return post.

L1s leads are thick, just bend them over and solder. I use GOOP to glue the L down. Works better than a tie-wrap.

Thanks for the offer but I can solder and this should make a fun project this weekend.

With the resistor mounting being non-standard I want to be sure I do this correctly.

Are you sure about the jumpers? From the "deluxe" instructions it states:

d) J3 not installed.

I think your hookup diagram is correct. It looks a lot like the photo of the deluxe board, and tracing the schematic against your diagram, everything looks right.

Just a comment. The JBL 4430 was one of Zilch's favorite speakers and an inspiration for his work with 2 way designs. I believe that used the bi radial horn you have. I am on the road and don't have my usual computer, but you may want to check into this:

I think those horns are pretty valuable though, if you decide not to use them.

Found some things I can use locally. A 1.9 cf unfinished enclosures from JBL 4428 studio monitors. Depending on the horn I would put it outside or in the enclosure. I will need to make a new front baffle to fit the horn properly.

I also purchased some old speakers that contained a JBL 2204H 12 inch woofer and a JBL 2344A horn without the compression driver.

Is the 2344A horn any good?

There is a local guy selling a B&C ME15 90x60 exponential horn with DE400Tn drivers. How does the DE400TN compare to the DE250?

I could fit the small JBL clone from parts express easily within the enclusore. The QSC would need to go outside. From what I have read, the QSC is superior.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Those are beautiful!

I remember reading something when GordonW reconed those but I can't find the thread. I'm going to be building some E-waves using CTS woofers but info on the pair I have is sparse to say the least.

Your cabs are much nicer than the ones I'll be using!

Hey Al,
Thanks. I finished the stands yesterday and I'll probab ly start the grills in a few.
I'll post some pics when I get them done.

I don't know what cts woofers typically spec out at. SInce they were used in the earlier klipsch, maybe you could look those up and get an idea.
