So, here's my latest addition to my rig. Initially, I had a TEAC X-3MKII that served me quite nicely, but I stumbled across this one locally. In very nice physical condition, but it sounded horrible and I noticed an issue with the pinch rollers. I took a chance and offered him $150 in hopes that I could repair it. I've gone over my X-3MKII, replaced the belts, cleaned the pots etc, so I'm not afraid to crack it open. As luck would have it, the pinch rollers just needed a little cleaning and lubricating and this thing is running "tip top"...

These are all cassette decks I have. Being from the top to the bottom in inserted picture below with all of my decks stacked on top of each other being:

1x Philips N5748
2x Philips N2552
1x Philips N5741
1x Philips N2552




Two of the Philips N2552's are perfect working, but one Philips N2552 has a power supply issue ( doesn't power on) and needs two replacement gears and a toggle switch shaft with chrome switch sleeve / cap.



The Philips N5741 perfectly working now with new gears. But still needs the plastic toggle switch shafts replaced with the appropriate knob caps if I can. But If I can't, I will just replace the entire missing toggle switches. I do have them from another parted out N5741

The latest and definitely last addiction (of today) is thus the black N5748 on top of the stack. It also needs of course at least one new gear which I got. And it very likely needs capacitor replacement on the power supply board (although that is not 100% sure yet), because the transports solenoid doesn't stay engaged when activated. Other then that, it is minty / "perfect".

Addiction? I understand. But nahhhh. You see I have had several of my residences in the past, full with even at one time over a hundred vintage Hi-FI / High(er) End components. Was a lot of fun. Hence: I repaired for myself and listened to all kinds of vintage higher-end stuff from the 70's and 80's.

i bought this Philips gear for keeps / rest of my life!

You are thus just looking at 2 different daily active setups at my next house being:

Setup 1)
Bedroom set: Philips 22AH207 receiver with one Philips N2552 cassette deck

Setup 2)
Livingroom / music room: Philips 22AH105 tuner, Philips 22AH308 Integrated amp and two Philips N2552 cassette decks

Again: The rest of the components is for fun to repair and or for unobtanium parts donors.
For example; All these Philips cassette decks I have are technically 100% the identical . Also the 708 receivers, 308 integrated amps and the 105 tuner got a zillion uniform interchangeable parts.

So if I hoarded at all; I just duplicated extra 'same model' components, for my repair hobby and or as 'future' unobtanium parts donor(s) for my gear in use.

And indeed; this was my last ever vintage Hi-Fi component purchase, including thus of these Philips 1997/81 Hi-Fi generation series pieces / units.

Note: Al my Philips gear is currently not in use. But stored in the house where I live, till I move to my next house overseas were it will be used on a daily basis! I spend in total under €1400 euros in on all these Philips components mentioned in my AK 'signature' in this post and it is all purchased in the last 4 months. Only one brand new amplifier would have cost me the same so to speak. And I do not own any other new or used Hi-Fi gear.

But It was definitely a somewhat stressful buying frenzy or 'journey'. Anyways, I am now definitely and permanently, vintage Hi-Fi satisfied! Aside next year some decent speakers, CD player a TT and streamer/DAC.

Well, I saw this beauty on eBay a couple weeks ago and pulled the trigger. Took a gamble as the seller said the thing would power up, but wouldn't play and by his own admission, he didn't know anything about reel to reel decks. Having experience with my former TEAC X-3mkII and my X-10, I know that these old TEAC sometimes only need the pinch rollers and belt replaced....so I made a really low offer thinking all he could do was decline...but he accepted!


Sho'nuff...the pinch rollers were seized and the belt had snapped after turning to goo. About an hours worth of simple work and this gorgeous thing is humming along...A thing of beauty...

Here are all the Cassette Decks I have in my collection. 6 Nakamichi's 2 MR2's , 1 LX-3 and 2 LX-5's. 2 Pioneer cassette decks and 4 Pioneer RT 707 2 silver and two black. I tried to get nice versions of each. I don't have a huge collection. I've made major upgrades to the shelving used to display my vintage audio gear. All that wood shelving is GONE, used for different tasks. My vintage audio gear has been moved to commercial grade display shelving. I have three display positions in my home and all three are being updated. I hate the wire mesh shelves in these metal units. I liked the old wood shelves but they were way too light weight and small for my heavy collection.
