favorite vintage JBL speakers?

Of all the JBLs I have heard, the L36's were by far the best.

Here's some of my favorites: 4425, 4333B, L300 x 4, Sumo Samson Sub with JBL 2235H, plus 4 x Yamaha PC2002M + 4 x PC2002 amps for power!

Nothing succeeds like excess...would you like to take a seat?

It is just SO helpful when somebody proves that they're nuttier than I am...thanks for that!

Good show! :thmbsp:

Thanks, it was your pic of all your Midsize L bookshelfs that inspired me. At some point I'll have to get the bookshelf versions out, but most of them need refoaming.

Awesome display of speakers, indeed!

I feel so left out! :tears:

Rome

Rome, its not too late. Start with those 4435's that have been on Dallas CL and you're near the top already! I started with L19's and L40's and just kept on the lookout. 2 of the L300's (facing the camera) are fully rebuilt from parts and cabinets I collected over 5 years. That pair is getting prepped to ship to Australia and will be a subject of another thread when I get back home from a Chicago business trip.

You can do it!

He's just covering up the porn to make it AK safe.

How'd ya know :naughty:

As for the chair "stands", those have been replaced since that photo was taken. I built two plywood boxes and stuffed them with phone books, which I learned from another AKer make an easy and effective form of insulation at a great price. The new stands greatly reduce bass resonance from the floor and make a noticeable difference in the tightness and control of the low end.

The unfortunate thing is I can't listen to my 4425s right now as they have developed a recurring issue somewhere in the crossover wiring and I am going to need to get them worked on by a real tech (not me, in other words). I miss them and can't wait to get them back on line.

Hi there M!

Yea, but my piggy bank looks like this: :D

I had hopes of looking into buying some speaks this month, but my Sherwood
S-8900A blew some smoke the other day, so I will start saving to get it fixed.

Vintage JBLs like some mentioned in this thread are always on my list.

Thanks for the kind sentiment,
Rome

Lots of great sounding JBLs around - my friend Mark has some nice 250tis,
and some day, perhaps I'll hear BMWcca's 4345s (heard his L7s, but they aren't vintage) ...

I have a pair of bi-amped 4341 JBL 4-ways in one room, (with a B380 vintage Sub, and L20s for surround),
and upstairs we have some heavily modded L200s (converted to 3 ways, then added smith horns - see Avatar).

I started with L-36s bought new years ago - but after I got used to the hearing the big 15s and horns,
I sold off the L-36s - there was no point in keeping them! ...

got to hear the 4350 back in the late 70's in Bloomington Indiana...at that time Crown IC-150 and bi-amped Phase linear 700's were the driving force from a Crown 722 R2R...simply amazing:music:

Interesting. L36 are only one's I've had in my house. Gave them t my son last year. Though I liked them I felt they were a tad bright.

Now I have a rebuilt Eico HF-81. Tried it with my son's L36 and do not want to give them back. May have to get another pair.

I recaped, foamed, used PIO bypass, and new binding posts. Heaven with the Eico :music:

Sansui made drivers for JBL ??

:scratch2:

This would be a new one for me, I'm doubting it until I'm informed different.

FWIW, I had four or five different speaker pairs hooked to a Niles switchbox for a little bit. Among the pairs were JBL 4312's and an older Sansui C(61CU?). I thought the midrange from the 4" Sansui mid was better than the JBL, clarity balance, and range were better. This was based on my ears.

I'm sorry, I was wrong that that info.
Sansui were distributor for JBL in japan and use JBL drivers in sansui speakers made in japan. The sansui sp-5500 were the only speakers made in japan and have JBL drivers in them.
