dumped $900 worth of newish NAD gear and every system noted above sounds wayyyyyyyyy better.[/QUOTE]

Did you read analog addict's post about his NAD Amp? I have never owned an NAD anything. If I find a working unit cheap. Worth a try at these prices. Their stuff seams pretty cheap to me. And many high end audio stores are trying to push them into your face. Thankfully I don't waste my time in those places any longer. Why, when we can find such great stuff. I would like to get my hands on one of those Kenwood TT's. I should have a KD 3070 for free soon.

Man I wish I could find a pair of baby advents and a nice NAD integrated around here. Too bad. Guess I need to be more patient.

Here's the list...

AMPLIFIERS

NAD 3080 $40 - A Kick Ass 90 WPC with 3db dynamic headroom. Equivalent to most peoples' 125 WPC amps...

PREAMPS
Halfer dh-101 $10 - Well known high quality pre amp.

CD PLAYERS

Sony dvp-s7000 $10 - I like Sony CDP's....:dunno:

SPEAKERS

Dalquest DQ-12 $25 - I have a pair of these, and I really like them. I'll bet the NAD will make these sing...

TUNERS
Onkyo t-4090 $10 - I like my T-9, this one's close in vintage....

TURNTABLES

Kenwood kd-850 turntable $10 - seems to plenty said already...

So I have $105....Sue me....:D

Hook 'em up and see how they sound....:thmbsp:

Thanks for the Idea. bypass the pre in the NAD and let her rip. The sony I have hooked up now and really is nice sounding.

I still have my NAD 7080, the receiver brother to your 3080 purchased new in 1981. One of my buddies in college had the 3080. Always envied him the -20db switch. Either one will get stupid loud with reasonably efficient speakers. Lots of people rag on NAD's build quality. That piece is from ~1978, and from one of the first lines to see major distribution to the US. Some of the button caps/switches are cheap, but the electronics are good quality, and the sound is excellent....:music:

The 3080 had a pre-out, amp-in jack, so you could use the Hafler, or even just try the NAD's pre. I forgot that it was an integrated...:stupid:

I had good experiences with earlier generations of used NAD gear. After we made a move into our 'last' home I splurged and bought new NAD separates- with remotes!!!:D. Spent an entire year trying to like it (370 integrated, Tuner- model # escapes me at the moment and a 541i disc player). The tuner was the first to go, then the integrated; I still have the cd player. I never came close to hearing what all those reviewers were hearing, definitely not Hi-Fi on a budget as advertised  The amp was flat, uninspiring and one dimensional to my ears. Taught me a valuable lesson- trust your ears. I replaced it with a Kenwood Model 600 :thmbsp:

Along the way I scrounged up some really nice sounding receivers and the odd tuner here and there; kept some and traded others. It's been a great journey and education to say the least. Funny, if the NAD gear had been halfway decent I may never have caught the vintage bug and found my way here.

Recent GW finds by a newbie...not much but it's a start. Now to start the upgrade process!

RECEIVER
Kenwood KR-6600 $35

SPEAKERS
Paradigm 9se $30 (marked $50 w/40% off coupon)

TURNTABLE
Some Techncs POS (works but needs overhaul) $9.99

Hi,

The following should be considered unusually fine luck:

McIntosh 225 Power Amplifier
McIntosh C 22 Preamplifier
McIntosh MR 65B FM tuner
Altec Lansing Valencia Speakers
Thorens TD 124 turntable with SME III arm and Shure V 15 Type IV cartridge
Crown SX 700 series open reel
All Manuals and cables

Price:

Free (Curbside find and in nice shape, the power amp needed recapping $20 in parts)

Found a shiny looking chrome plated piece of gear being gently lowered to the curb on my way to work. Looked at it and it was a McIntosh 225. Gentleman said "You can have it, it hums bad". "If you'll wait, I'll bring you the rest of the system". He did and gave me all manuals and cables. All in use now.

This has to be one of the best scores that I have read about here on AK congratulations! :thmbsp:

If only this could happen to me. (think of all the money I could have saved)

Current system in the den:

Kenwood KA-8100 - $25
Panasonic something or other TT - $5
Philips something or other DVD - $45
AR-3 speakers - $10* (plus new caps - $?)

*I really don't recall whether the AR's were $5 each or for the pair :scratch2:.

I would really like to know how and where you all find all this stuff for dirt cheap?

Am I just living in the wrong town, and everyone around here knows values? Am I not looking hard enough? I go to all the sales I can find.. I do the thrifts too, but it's all crap, OR.. priced WAY too high...

I've got just a couple pieces I paid less than $100 for.. but the rest has been in the hundreds..

Maybe some day I'll get lucky and find some real bargins..

Office System - $107 (just over)

Amp - Marantz 2270 ($25)
CD Player - NAD 5200 ($20)
Turntable - Philips 222 (Free on Craigslist)
Speaker Wire - Monster 16aug ($5 for 100 ft.)
Speakers - Boston CR57 Cherry ($57 shipped)

All for $107! That sounds really good to me right now. If I saw an ad listing all this, I would flip.

There is some amazing stuff on DC Craigslist. You have to look all the time and be ready to pounce. I saw some nice TT's on there in the last few weeks. I can never get down there. To far. Funny nobody finds anything in the Thrifts down there. I am really surprised. You guys must be looking in the worst possible places. My local Thrift has sucked for a while. I haven't seen anything except a dead Dynaco Amp, and a couple lower end DD TT's which I did buy. And no, the Dynaco was nothing to get excited about. Great finds only show up once in a while. You have to keep looking. That Sansui I found on New Years Eve was bought in a store I have not seen one piece of worthwhile equipment in two years. So you never know.

I don't know.. maybe too I'm looking for the high end stuff for the unreal prices. I don't even stop to think about the lower end stuff.. could be why I'm not seeing much... Just not worth it for me to look for names other than like Pioneer (A PL 570 or 590 TT) or Denon, McIntosh, Altec, Klipsch... I think you see what I look for.. no bargins there..

Where do I start... haha.

JBL l100 - $20
Altec Lancing Santana II's - $30
Altec model 6's - $20
Altec model 5's - $30
EPI model 500's - $70
JBL L26 - $20
Sansui Spx-7000 - $75
Dual 606 - $70
Marantz 2265b - $30 bucks
Luxman 5l15 - free
Luxman l2 - $5

these have all been purchased in the last 3-4 months.

My current system is the Altec 6's and Santana II's running on a bag of 12 gauge wire i got a value village (5 bucks). My amp is the luxman L2, and my cd player is a ps2 (yeah i know) for 5 bucks.

So, all together... 60 bucks so far.

Similost,

It takes patience and some vigilance. Don't expect anything and just make your usual rounds. Watch the classifieds, tag sales, thrifts and auctions (online and local)...and be patient. It will fall in your lap when you least expect it. Most of it is crap but there are gems out there .

Pretty cool thread

I'll try to follow the rules, but that's tough! Most of the stuff I buy costs less than $20. That's all I usually have on a Sat morn when I stop at a yardsale. I won't list all the gear, just enough to make a decent system for $100.

Luxman R-115 receiver
Kenwood EQ
Both for $10

Sansui TT
$7 from a friend who was selling it at a yardsale

Allison 8 speakers. From CL-my most expensive component for this
system:
$70

Pioneer CT-F800 cassette
Free from neighbor

Sony 5 disc CD changer from CL:
$15

$102 total. Darn it! Went over by $2!
I could leave out the Kenwood EQ? I'll sell it for $20 and be under by $18.

Well, I tried.

Man! I can't believe the deals you guys get! Fabulous, fantastic, freaky!

Rick

Read the post after this one. And maybe you already did. He says he never thought of lower end gear what ever that means. If he pulled his nose out of the air, and brought it down to Earth he might find something.

Let me see, I can still put my hands on all of these, except for one, and this would have been my contribution:

Amp: NAD 3155 - $14
Preamp: PS Audio IV - free, needed repair
CD: NAD C521i - free, needed repair
TT: Denon DP-45F - $49
Speakers: Large Advents, walnut, bull-nosed cabinets - $8.99, plus $20 for foam.

Oh wait! I forgot the tuner!

Carver TX-11 - $12 :D
