100 dollar stereo challenge!

Let's see... this has to be TOTAL under $100? How about this:

Speakers: Infinity RS II speakers, FREE from the trash

CD player (+ LDs added): Pioneer CLP-HF9G Japanese domestic-market-only LD player with a TOP quality CD player in it. Cost $50.

Turntable: Some choices here, but I'll say the Luxman TT that was only $10, just to keep the cost total within limits. It's actually very nice, as one expects from Luxman.

Receiver: Marantz 2285B for $45.

YIKES! That makes $105. Okay, then cheapen the system by replacing the better Pioneer LD/CD player with the still-good Denon one that was FREE as it was going to be trashed/recycled. That brings the cost back down to $55 so far...

Wires: Speaker wires FREE made from a box of CAT 5 cable recovered from the trash outside a construction site. [Intelligent building, stupid workers!]
One interconnect FREE from a friend, used to connect the CD (LD player); the turntable came with its own connecting wires, so that's it for interconnects.

Cassette: With $45 left to play with, I can throw in the Nakamichi ZX-7 for thirty bucks.

That leaves fifteen dollars to add something... How about some cheap wooden shelves that I got, to serve as a rack?! That would bring the total to about $98.50, just under the wire.

Of course, in reality I would NEVER power my Infinity RS IIs with the Marantz 2285B; one would have to keep the volume down to prevent those two from tearing each other apart, so to speak!

And I don't think ANYONE is going to best KentTeffeteller's Mac/Altec/Thorens totally free system score. I know that I've never been THAT lucky, although I'm pleased with what I have been lucky enough to get, especially the free Infinities!

Oh, gosh. Just to be mean:

Marantz 1250 integrated, $18
Dual 1264 (with Shure V15 III) $2
Sony C7esD $5
Pioneer TX-608 (TX-6800 w/black dial) $5
4 KLH 32s, running stacked, total of $6

Total of $36

But, be comforted, I'm cheating a little: the Shure needs a new stylus. :p:

Holy Smokes!

What year was this?

Hi,

The following should be considered unusually fine luck:

McIntosh 225 Power Amplifier
McIntosh C 22 Preamplifier
McIntosh MR 65B FM tuner
Altec Lansing Valencia Speakers
Thorens TD 124 turntable with SME III arm and Shure V 15 Type IV cartridge
Crown SX 700 series open reel
All Manuals and cables

Price:

Free (Curbside find and in nice shape, the power amp needed recapping $20 in parts)

Found a shiny looking chrome plated piece of gear being gently lowered to the curb on my way to work. Looked at it and it was a McIntosh 225. Gentleman said "You can have it, it hums bad". "If you'll wait, I'll bring you the rest of the system". He did and gave me all manuals and cables. All in use now.

Well,

My newest whole system that I aquired within the last year whould be my vintage tube audio system. I don't really include my cd player with it, but I did get a portable one, which I did list:

Tuner: Fisher FM-1000 - free
Turntable: Numark TT 1400 - free
Preamp: Leak Point One - free
Amps (pair) Leak TL/25 Pluses - free
CD (portable) Magnavox AZ 6832/17 - free
Speakers Visonik Ambassador 120 - free
Cables Misc desent quaily cables - free

Note: I got my speakers several years ago, so I can add that I have recieved many other speakers, mostly loose Cerwin Vegas and boxes with misc. crossover networks. I don't use them with my system above, just like my CD player, but I can, just to stay within the rules.

I also aquired all listed, over a year ago, but I got all (plus tons of other audio stuff) as a package deal to sort through and figure out what to sell, keep, or throw away. So technically, they became part of my stereo to keep within a year ago.

Anyhow, I also decided to keep plenty of other stuff to make up other systems and such, but the set up Ihave listed is so far my baby that I like the most.

Sansui 9090DB - $35
Altec Bolero c's - $40 (or AR 2ax's - $35)
Technics SL-1800MK2 - $12.50 (acquired with an SL-1200MK2 for $25 total)
Denon DCD-1500 CD Player - $12.50 (acquired with a big BPC HT receiver for $25 total)

Total: $100. Acquired in the past year.

Hooray for Craigslist and Estate/Yard Sales!

I am not very technical I can only relay what I hear.It has the quality sound Rich and warm as the older powerhouse receivers but with a more modern sound???.With 160 wpc it took me to heights i had never heard in a stereo.

1. Sansui G-9000 for $20 2. McIntosh MR-78 for $20 3. Sony PS-X7 turntable for $15 4. JBL 4310's for $10 5. Pioneer CT-F1000 for $25 6. Pioneer P-D70 for $5. That's about the best I can do for under $100. However, there's no way to compete with guys finding large lots of vintage McIntosh and Altec gear on the curb or in a dumpster. That's what we call a BOLLY deal!!!!!!!! Brad

Hi all,

My lucky McIntosh find was 3 months ago on my way to work on Sharp's Ridge in Knoxville, TN. Old gentleman who owned it was super nice and very well off. The power amp got repaired in one afternoon. The tuner and preamp have been recapped, the Thorens belt replaced and the Crown overhauled and this gear is functioning like new. The old gent even helped me load it into the station wagon.
